January 20, 2018:
The Taiwan Academy in Los Angeles, a project of the Taiwan Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with Glass Garage Gallery and bG Gallery, will be hosting a special artists’ reception in connection with the “Ocean of Memories” exhibition.

The group show features artists from Taiwan and North America exploring the theme of the ocean and memories as metaphors for immigration and for things that both unite and divide, among other universal themes. The event will include a special presentation by the artists discussing their work and their very personal memories of the ocean and of crossing cultures. Artists include: Danielle Eubank, Susan Hannon, Fong-Chi Lien, Cindy Shih. Kayne Griffin Corcoran presents “Antarctica,” an ongoing photographic series by artist Liza Ryan. Ryan’s photographs of Antarctica forefront two concerns: environmentalism and photographic essentials. The art of Noburu Takayama will be also celebrated. Takayama’s exhibition features two monumental sculptures from his signature material, railroad ties. The sculptures will be both indoors and within the galleries outdoor courtyard space. As a participating gallery in the region-wide Getty Foundation endeavor, Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, Jack Rutberg Fine Arts will present two exhibitions. “Rico Lebrun in Mexico” and “Francisco Zuniga: Sculpture & Drawings.” “Rico Lebrun in Mexico,” focuses attention on the period when the renowned artist moved to San Miguel de Allende in 1952 to teach art at the Instituto Allende. There a new generation of Mexican artists was introduced to and inspired by Rico Lebrun, who distinguished himself not only as a painter and compelling draftsman, but also as a formidable muralist. Francisco Zuniga: Sculpture & Drawings” brings together selected works on paper and an exceptional breadth of sculpture in bronze, wood and stone, which masterfully portray Zuniga’s indigenous women as an elemental force. January 25-28, 2018:
This weekend we have two art fairs taking place (both are part of LAArtParty’s Top Ten list)…there is another fun event taking place just across the street from the Art Los Angeles Contemporary at the Barker Hangar.

MORE ART HERE is a FREE artist organized event taking place on January 25-28, 2018 from 12-6pm – Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Over 25 artists will open their studios while they work inviting visitors to CONNECT + COLLECT directly. While you are there visit Arena 1 Gallery (the main gallery at SMAS) to take in a four-day pop-up exhibition, “Points of Departure” curated by Maurizzio Hector Pineda featuring the Resident artists of the Santa Monica Art Studios. There are scheduled events planned through the weekend at SMAS, 3026 Airport Avenue, SM;

Venice Arts celebrates “Venice Stories,” an incredible collection of photography, film, animation, and comics created as part of a year-long storytelling project across all workshops in our Art Mentoring & Education program. Capturing the people, places, history, and current pulse of the Venice community, these works explore the neighborhood from a variety of perspectives. Photo stories include portraits of long-time Venice artists; images that show the dynamism of skateboard culture; photo essays and interviews with multi-generational residents; and a series of local civil servants.

Video stories focus on black surfers and the history of racial restrictions on the beach; the ‘hidden history’ of Venice’s communities of color; and newer residents/businesses in Venice. The comics class imagines the pre-history of Venice—as seen through the eyes of pterodactyls. Together these works record the rich tapestry that makes Venice vibrant and unique.
