Called the “Chronicler of Cool”, Phil Stern is noted for his iconic portraits of Hollywood stars such as Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, as well as JFK’s inauguration. But there is another, less glamorous, side to Stern’s work that has largely been unknown – until now. During World War II, Stern trained and fought with the U.S. Army’s 1st Ranger Battalion, better known as Darby’s Rangers, through some of the most important battles in the North African and Italian campaigns. In Snapdragon, noted writer Liesl Bradner melds Stern’s World War II photographs with his wartime diary to create a unique and captivating chronicle of the war.
