AnSat-June4-Griffin-Kayne-Corcoran-DeannaThompsonother early one takes place….just south of Hollywood…

Kayne Griffin Corcoran is pleased to present a survey in memoriam of Deanna Thompson (1958-2015).

See image: Deanna Thompson, Desert House 2014 #7, 2014, Oil on canvas, 32 x 28 inches

Thompson began her career as a painter in Los Angeles before moving to Yucca Valley in the 1990s.  For more than three decades, she was influenced by the vast landscape of the California desert.  Largely living and working in isolation, Thompson explored the modern tension between society and her overwhelming natural environment.

Thompson’s paintings describe a sense of beauty found in the marks of human activity passed. Her works reinvent the romantic view of landscape, painting in favor of one that is unsentimental and rooted firmly in the moment.

At 4:30pm, enjoy a “F.HOLE” reading by Justine Kurland; Music by Marc Ribot.

Or head downtown early…

Sat-June4-CB1-AnnelieMcKenzie-PortraitofGladysJohnstonStarting at 3pm…

CB1 Gallery celebrates the work of LA-based artist Annelie McKenzie, “Man in Canoe and Grizzly.” The title comes from a 1960 painting of the same name by Canadian landscape artist Gladys Johnson.

See image: Annelie McKenzie, Portrait of Gladys Johnston, 2016, oil, caulking and enamel on decorative frame, 20″ x 16″

In the party game Who’s Coming to Dinner? participants are asked to choose any number of dinner guests, famous or not, from any period in time, and imagine what the party would be like. Annelie McKenzie’s exhibition is her personal variation of that game, except that she has imagined a museum exhibition, choosing artists—famous or not, from any period in time–and they become her “Old Masters.”

Intermedial artist Marc Fichou’s new installation “Outside-In” offers the closest thing you can get to a look inside another person’s mind. A series of large-scale panels, augmented by discrete wall works and proximal sculptural objects, are arrayed in an obsessive frieze of cross-referential, non-linear vectors and clusters which interpretively document the artist’s ongoing research into the nature of reality.

Also in Beverly Hills…

Timothy Yarger Gallery presents “Light Fields” featuring acclaimed German artist, Udo Nöger. Nöger is known for his ephemeral, contemplative, and intriguing white paintings based on the synthesis of the painted image and structured light. While his paintings appear to glow, no artificial light source is behind the matrix of their construction, instead the structure is purely dependent on ambient light. Nöger’s works are sensitive, reserved, and refuse quick interpretation.

LAM Gallery is pleased to announce The Strength and the Spirit, a benefit exhibition of emotionally stirring photographs by Sean O’Neal. O’Neal, a photographer who earned acclaim taking unedited photos of nature in remote regions in California, has created a series of powerful, raw images documenting the aftermath of the April 25, 2015 Nepal earthquake.

ASat-June5-2016-LAMGallery-Sean-ONealt a devastating magnitude of 7.8, the quake and its aftershocks killed almost 9,000 people and injured over 21,000 one year ago. O’Neal’s photographs, taken 2 months later, reveal the permanent marks the earthquake has left on the Nepalese people and landscape.

O’Neal traveled to Nepal in June 2015 with CITTA, a non-profit organization focused on supporting development in some of the most economically challenged, geographically remote, and marginalized communities in the world. Traveling first by car and then on foot, O’Neal accompanied CITTA relief workers as they visited the capital of Kathmandu and smaller cities, all reduced to rubble by the earthquake. 25% of the proceeds from the benefit exhibition will support CITTA’s ongoing work in Nepal. By highlighting different types of work — art, activism and service — the artist proposes an expansion of labor solidarity and political activism. A subtext of the show is the notion of radical patience; that there is more to a resistance effort than one lifetime and real change in our communities requires immediate urgency and ongoing endurance.
