Downtown…Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles hosts a public opening to celebrate two talented artists – Charles Gaines, and Philip Guston.

This is Hauser & Wirth’s first exhibition with the American artist and revered Los Angeles educator. Gaines will unveil new grid works that focus on native trees from Palm Canyon, Gaines employs his singular ‘systems’ – methods he has engaged for over four decades to challenge subjectivity and direct personal experience.

‘Resilience: Philip Guston in 1971’ is the first solo Los Angeles exhibition in over half a century dedicated to American artist Philip Guston. The exhibition sheds light on a pivotal year that launched Guston into the final prolific decade of his career, during which he painted what are now celebrated as some of the most important works of art of the 20th Century. On the occasion of the gallery’s 25th anniversary, Blum & Poe is pleased to re-present its inaugural exhibition, Anya Gallaccio’s Stroke. Initially exhibited in September of 1994 at Blum & Poe’s first location in Santa Monica, Stroke is a visceral installation of thick, dark chocolate painted on the gallery walls. Twenty-five years later, Gallaccio will recreate this installation in an exhibition space that mirrors the exact dimensions of the gallery in which Stroke was originally presented.
