In Santa Monica…enjoy some more openings at Bergamot Station.

Start early (4 pm) at Ruth Bachofner Sat-Feb28-RuthBacofnerGallery features an exhibition of paintings by Tony Beauvy.

Tony Beauvy is a Los Angeles-based painter who received his M.F.A. from UCLA. The exhibition brings together a series of abstract paintings that Beauvy approaches with an improvisational approach, that involve notions of figuration as well as formal approaches. The large scale of the work creates environments in which viewers are enveloped by fibrous drips of paint over successively layered fields. On view: February 28th – April 11th

TAG Gallery (at Bergamot Station, SM) presents three new exhibitions featuring the art of Christo Brock, Elizabeth Szymczak, and Kamil Vojnar. The artist reception will be held Saturday, February 28, 5-8 pm.

STAG-ChristoBrock-Tortured-OrangeLine-PhotoonMetal-20x30ee image: Christo Brock, Tortured Orange Line, Photo on Metal, 20 x 30 in.

In his latest work, Brock continues to explore unwonted (unusual, unexpected) imagery from everyday life. In all his imagery, printed exclusively on metal, Brock shows the unique vision that has characterized his work.

Elizabeth Szymczak captures the dynamism of motion, whilst maintaining an exemplary level of realism. She paints out of a love for dance and the expressing of emotion through movement. Szymczak’s paintings render what the figures are attempting to evoke.

Kamil Vojnar utilizes many paradoxical elements in his work. His pieces have a gritty, yet delicate and elegant feel. They are ethereal, yet remarkably tangible.

Casper Brindle’s neweSat-Feb28-WilliamTurner-BrindleCasper-Horizontal-Scatter-2015-acrylic-automotive-paintand-resinonpanel-44x94st series of paintings dives headfirst into this realm, exploring the expressive possibilities of color. Brindle’s works occupy the space where Color Field painting, Light and Space conceptualism and Finish Fetish sensibilities intersect. Borrowing tools and techniques from the industrial complex of California car culture, Brindle applies paint to his surfaces in multiple layers of fine airbrush sprays.

Also opening tonight is “Jimi Gleason: Silver Light.” Combining his unique style of alchemical painting with rigid geometric forms, Jimi Gleason debuts a collection of works that merge Hard-Edge aesthetics with Light and Space ideals. The result is a new kind of contemporary minimalism.

Sat-Feb27-Samuelfreeman-ErinMorrisonSamuel Freeman celebrates the art of Erin Morrison

See image: Erin Morrison

Erin Morrison’s paintings are constructed using a system of production rooted in both the fine and applied arts, speaking to the viewer with an institutional and domestic voice simultaneously.

Her cast-plaster surfaces are highly tactile, existing somewhere on the spectrum between painting and sculpture—as relief. The works reference the iconography of domestic spaces and the objects that inhabit them, echoed in the form and language of archeological artifacts.

Or head Downtown….

Sat-feb28-PYOPYO Gallery LA is pleased to announce “PAUSE,” an exhibition of recent paintings by the celebrated actor, producer, and visual artist, Ha Jung-Woo.

The films of Ha Jung-Woo are internationally acclaimed for the complex characters he portrays in the movies, but few know he is equally skilled as an artist.

This exhibition will debut a series of paintings composed in Hawaii while he was working on an upcoming film. Ha’s artworks explore the emotional groundwork of the various personas he inhabits, serving as a method of study and of departure from the scripted situations that appear on screen. He paints from the inside out, blending Pop imagery with a passion for simplicity, pattern, and color. His subjects consist of portraits, crosses, and iconic motifs rendered in a style that evokes Primitivism and folk art.

This exhibition of new work by Georgopoulo explores familiar themes and tropes of sexuality, consumerism, and money worship – thoughtfully disguised in popular culture as the American dream.

Following in the same lineage of artists such as John Chamberlain or even Marcel Duchamp, by using objects – old car parts, disused slot machines and other jettisoned materials – Georgopoulos investigates the self-cannibalizing culture of consumerism.

Fifth Floor Gallery is pleased to present “Cruising,” a group show curated by Paul W. Evans featuring Los Angeles artists Helen Rebekah Garber, Esmeralda Montes and Kim Tucker.

Sat-Feb28-CruisingPostCard2-1Stealth glances and peripheral looks encompass a world of hopeful connections. With their own agendas and their own flaws, the work shown here presents itself, then withdraws. Secretly conversing with each other, yet slyly catching a glimpse of their audience, these players are well aware of their idiosyncrasies, their powers and the stage they command.

Helen Rebekah Garber’s no-nonsense portraits confront us with a delirious confidence, much like the way the artist masterfully applies paint.

Esmeralda Montes’ dreamlike pastorals are suffused with memory. Shy bodies, slightly hidden, call out to be found.

Kim Tucker’s mementos to love’s clumsiness are cool and unabashed in their total lack of decorum.
