Hauser & Wirth presents The Generative Universe by Keith Tyson. This is the artist’s first exhibition in LA since 2009. The solo show brings together more than three decades of paintings, sculptures, and mixed-media works. Tyson examines how forms appear, develop, and disappear through interconnected natural and material processes. ‘I don’t believe in a permanent self or in developing an artistic style. Our world is full of intricately connected systems and events. I’m simply trying to make work in collaboration with them.”

Initially trained as an engineer, Tyson later became one of the early artists associated with generative art. Rather than controlling every artistic decision, he creates systems that allow chance, mathematics, intuition, and physical reactions to influence the final result. Consequently, his work often combines scientific inquiry with experimental artistic methods. Furthermore, the exhibition demonstrates how Tyson merges structured systems with unpredictable outcomes to produce complex visual experiences.

A major focus of the exhibition includes Tyson’s Artmachine works from the early 1990s. For this series, Tyson programmed a machine that generated creative instructions, which he then completed manually. As a result, the works reduce the artist’s personal control while emphasizing randomness and system-based creation. Moreover, these projects challenge conventional ideas surrounding authorship and artistic intention.

Additionally, the exhibition features works shaped through chemical reactions, mathematical structures, biological imagery, meditative painting practices, and handmade electronic devices. Through these varied approaches, Tyson encourages viewers to think about the hidden forces that shape reality and human consciousness. At the same time, the exhibition reinforces his long-standing interest in transformation, interconnected systems, and universal creation.
