5 Art Gallery celebrates its grand opening tonight. Founded by Parisian entrepreneurs and art collectors Jean-Jacques & Julie Darmon, the gallery will feature French street artists. Mix it Up Art Show is about bringing artists and the local community together to enjoy and experience a wide variety of art mediums and styles. 18th Street Arts Center holds its third major Pico Block Party community festival focused around youth artists and empowering youth voices today from 3-6pm. The family-friendly artistic festival will feature youth-led art-making workshops, performances, open studios with resident artists, exhibitions, food trucks, and other creative activities. The Pico Block Party series grew out of 18th Street Arts Center’s in-depth community outreach programs, including its bilingual neighborhood oral history project, CultureMapping90404.org. That project spurred the creation of a Neighborhood Advisory Council in 2018, who helped shaped the content for this Pico Block Party along the theme of “Empowering Youth Voices.” Check out the exhibitions currently on view at the arts center. Building Bridges Art Exchange holds an opening reception for “HOX Zodiac,” a collaborative project between an artist and neuroscientist since 2008. Based on the Chinese animal zodiac and the Hox gene, it has evolved into a “dinner” that addresses through experience and dialogue our deep relationship with animals as companions, food and lab experiments. The project brings up issues of GMO and food in a very personal way and also points to the growing influence of Chinese culture in the West.
