Skidmore Contemporary Art is proud to present new exhibitions…”Diving Boards and Floating Girls,” by Tracey Sylvester Harris, “Flowers,” featuring the art of Brighton Smith and “Lori Larusso’s “Eating Animals.”

“Diving Boards and Floating Girls” is Tracey Sylvester Harris’s thirteenth one-person exhibition and her fifth with Skidmore Contemporary Art. Her work is in numerous private and public collections, including five Delta Airlines Skyclub Lounges in the United States.

“In ‘Poolside Swimmer,’ certain nostalgic elements are apparent: a vintage-looking swimmers cap, classic red lips, and a retro, perhaps 1930s bathing suit. However, while these nostalgic qualities play a significant role in the work, Harris defies any notions of time. She challenges viewers to fuse past and present with her use of color, shape, and shadow. Harris utilizes vibrant, opaque colors such as her rich, deep blues of the ocean.” – Mirabelle Alan, June 2017This will be Brighton Smith’s third exhibition at the gallery. His previous exhibitions Stacks (2015) and Bookends (2016) were both well received. A feature on his work appears in the current French Quarter Magazine.”Although Smith’s transition from books to flowers may suggest a shift in his work, Flowers continues to promote Smith’s message of individuality. This is Lori Larusso’s second one-person exhibition at Skidmore Contemporary Art. She received her MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art. She has received numerous fellowships and has had over twenty one-person exhibitions since 2002.

“Lori Larusso’s “Eating Animals” demonstrates playful and imaginative subject matter. The series presents an array of animal-shaped foods, served for the viewer’s pleasure. Among these subjects, Larusso portrays bananas cut as dolphins, broccoli shaped poodles, deviled eggs as chicks, kiwis and grapes as turtles, along with many others. Perhaps the most significant aspect of Larusso’s work is her ability to integrate fun and amusement.“ – Mirabelle Alan, June 2017
