On May 20, 2026, Skirball Cultural Center debuts Inventing America: The Comic Book Revolution. A broad look at comic books and how they evolved, the exhibition takes us on a journey documenting how comic books became a cultural force. Specifically, it explores how creators shaped American identity through visual storytelling. The presentation spans the twentieth century, featuring more than 250 objects. While these include comic books, original illustrations, and archival materials, viewers can also participate with interactive installations.
The Comic Book Revolution

Michele Urton and Patrick A. Reed co-curated it and emphasized the contributions of immigrant and first-generation creators. Many early innovators came from Jewish backgrounds and infused their work with themes of struggle and reinvention.
The exhibition traces key historical moments that shaped comic narratives. For instance, it connects stories to the World War II, postwar anxieties, and social movements of the 1960s. Furthermore, it highlights later cultural shifts, including influences from pop art and hip-hop. Through these connections, comics emerge as both reflection and critique of American life.
Visitors encounter iconic characters such as Superman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man, and Black Panther. These figures illustrate changing ideals, fears, and aspirations across decades. Meanwhile, rare issues like Action Comics #1 and Captain America Comics #1 underscore the genre’s historical impact.
Finally, the exhibition aligns with the upcoming national semi-quincentennial. It encourages reflection on 250 years of American history through comics. Consequently, it positions the medium as both entertainment and a powerful record of cultural evolution.
