In Culver City…

Anat Ebgi is pleased to present “Sat-July30-2016-AnatEbgi-Sigrid SandstroOther Places,” the gallery’s second solo show by the Swedish painter Sigrid Sandström, opening July 30 and on view until August 27.

Sigrid Sandström, Untitled, 2016, acrylic on board, 14 x 11 inches
Sandström’s practice actively interrogates the methods by which viewing initiates and elicits thought and cognition. Her newest body of work consists of a series of portrait-sized paintings hung at equal distance throughout the gallery. As a gestural template, each painting comprises an assortment of brushstrokes impastoed onto intimately-scaled canvases colored vividly with swatches of magenta, industrial yellow and concrete grey. With wide gestures applied alongside delicately-painted trompe l’oeil motifs, Sandström situates the dialectic of her practice relationally to the perspective of the viewer.

On view: July 30th – August 27th

ATTENTION – there was a confusion about the time – we have received two different emails – the first stating 6-8pm, and the second listing the opening as 5-7pm? The GALLERY HAS CONFIRMED that the time is 5-7pm.

In Miracle MIle….There are two events in the same venue…one starts a bit earlier

LAUNCH LA is proud to present two series of new work from Hung Viet Nguyen.Sat-July30-2016-Launch-Personage

SACRED LANDSCAPE II (2015-present) Continued from the 2014-2015 series SACRED LANDSCAPE, this new body of work searches further to discover new forms, colors and spaces. Each painting expresses a unique perspective of scenery, distance, and space as a kaleidoscope of foreground, middle, and background.

PERSONAGE (2015-present) This new series of paintings express whimsical landscapes through swirling layers of paint and meticulous fields of bold colors. Playfulness with shapes and forms provide an inlet into the artist’s imagination through natural elements.

The salty scent of crashing waves, shear canyons and cliffs rise and drop in perspective, with colors that only exists in the bright Southern California sun…these along with the floating clouds and stars in the night sky are the inspirations that guide Hung Viet Nguyen. Each painting is a visual expression of the senses rather than a literary representation of a landmark; the emotion and spirit of each gathered from hikes in different regions around the globe and translated into a semi-abstract expression of what it felt like to be there.

Just downstairs in the same building, you’ll find an art  party starting at 7pm.  This one is ususally hoppin’ til 10pm.

KP Projects / MKG celebrated two new exhibitions – Vonn Sumner “To Be Seen” & Todd Carpenter “Sky Without Angels or Stars.”

SeSat-July30-KPProjects-Vonn Sumner-1-Crowd 2016 oilonlinen 66 x 60 inchese image; Vonn Sumner, Crowd, 2016, oil on linen, 66 x 60″

In Todd Carpenter’s newest body of work, “Without Angels or Stars” the artist investigates the nuances of the Los Angeles landscape as ethereal identity rather than as a direct reference to any physical geographical markers. The implied landscapes do not represent actual places, but rather our perceived

manifestations of how Los Angeles feels through light and shadow

The new exhibition will include oil paintings and works on paper that present Sumner’s trademark cast of characters: idiosyncratic, costumed figures in muted colors that enact ambiguous rituals. This show will include several paintings that feature the “sock-hat” figures that Sumner invented using a re-purposed head covering made for industrial painters; the characters comprise what Sumner refers to as “The Confraternity of the Sock”— an imagined secret society, or perhaps a traveling group of performers.
