Sat-April18-Bachofner-SharonWeinerSee image: Sharon Weiner, Through Time and Space (diptych) 2015, acrylic on canvas, 72 x 108″

Sharon Weiner’s abstract paintings emerge from a process of self-reflection and rigorous manipulation of paint. In her current series, Weiner trains acrylic paint into painterly volumes that seem suspended in various states of motion or metamorphosis. They are set in nebulous and vast, inky spaces made up of layer upon layer of paint that is alternately brushed, poured and airbrushed onto her canvases.

Charlie James Gallery presents its third solo exhibition of LA-based artist Nery Gabriel Lemus titled Just So Stories.

Sat-April-18-CharlieJames-NERY-GABRIELLEMUS

For the last eight years, Lemus’s practice has explored divisions between African-American and Latino cultures, and the means by which identity is assigned in contemporary culture. Lemus contends that identity is formed by the continuous interaction of people; hence identity is malleable and not fixed.

An activist artist, Lemus’s work creates metaphorical and allegorical structures that highlight societal issues and their possible remedies. The title of this exhibition is taken from the great Colonialist storyteller Rudyard Kipling’s 1902 book of short stories for children titled “Just So Stories.”

In most human endeavors, experience is a highly valued attribute. Not too many people ask for the “new guy” to perform a car repair and the demand for newly minted neurosurgeons surely does not outstrip supply.

In the performing and written arts, the wunderkind who is Oscar, Emmy or Pulitzer-worthy is celebrated but recognized as a rarity. In the visual arts, however, this construct is often turned on its head.

Artists include: Ada Pullini Brown, Leslie Brown, Jill Carol, Tammy Carlson-Greenwood, Brenda Hurst, Karen Karlsson, Karen Kauffman, Sant Khalsa, Denise Kraemer, Deborah Lambert, Susan Lasch Krevitt, Stevie Love, Snezana Petrovic, Karen Pollitt, Anita Ray, Cindy Rinne, Karrie Ross, Catherine Ruane, Caryl St. Ama, Sharon Suhovy, Jill Sykes and Robin Tripaldi.
