lowres400NoirFest SantaMonica This Saturday, a brand new festival comes to the West Side. NoirFest Santa Monica is an arts festival celebrating Noir in the city of Santa Monica.

See two of my articles about the upcoming kick off exhibition and the festival in this Friday’s Santa Monica Mirror as well as the Santa Monica Daily Press.

Created by multi-media artist and long time resident, Helen K. Garber (see photo below, by Kara Fox), the Festival runs from January 14th through March 28th.

NoirFest Santa Monica will include art, film, photography, literature, music and spoken word at various historic venues all over Santa Monica. Get ready for some incredible events. Stay tuned to LA Art Party…for more details.

This Saturday, January 14th marks the opening night and the first year, of NoirFest Santa Monica 2012 and will be held at dnj Gallery (J-1) at Bergamot Station Arts Center in Santa Monica from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.

Curated by Pamela Schoenberg, this exhibition will feature the work of artist, Helen K. Garber in a solo show entitled Encaustic Noir.”

In Gallery II, a classic tribute to Noir photography by legends such as famed Parisian photographer Brassai and several of his contemporaries will also be on display.

lowres HelenKGarber getty-center-frontReminiscent of the cinematic ventures of the 1940s and 1950s, NoirFest Santa Monica proposes to capture noir moments in time. Santa Monica’s ever present mist has inspired both filmmakers and novelists to use the city as a setting in many detective stories.

Like a rare black and white image plucked from a film noir or Raymond Chandler novel, NoirFest Santa Monica hopes to rekindle this simple yet striking part of Santa Monica history.

Immediately following the reception, patrons are invited to a no-host party at the Upper West Restaurant, the official Bar Noir for the festival. Located at 3321 Pico Blvd., (across from Trader Joe’s), Upper West Restaurant will be featuring specially priced drinks and appetizers, as well as introducing an event cocktail, the Bar Noir Manhattan.

Film Noir masterpieces will be projected with period music playing at the same time. Get into the spirit and come in Vintage attire.  Admission is free to both venues with no reservation needed, except for dinner. Call for a reservation at  (310) 586-1111.
