Luchita Hurtado

Born in Maiquetía, Venezuela (1920), Luchita Hurtado was based in Los Angeles artist until her death in 2020 at 99 years of age. Despite her interaction with other global artists, her voice stood out in a sea of talent creating original works across eight decades.

Yo Soy (“I Am”) is the artist’s first solo exhibition at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles. It features rare and never-before-seen drawings and paintings from a transformative period in her life. At that time Hurtado was inspired by the surge of feminist activism in LA in the 70s. She debuted her Linear Language series at the Woman’s Building in 1974. This was her first solo show. Included in that series embedded word paintings utilizing geometric forms. In addition, she cut and resewed artworks to express an ecological as well as spiritual union.

Furthermore, Yo Soy includes materials from the Hurtado archive. Viewers will see original show documentation, personal notes, and group materials. Ephemera from feminist organizations, such as Womanspace, the Woman’s Building, as well as the Los Angeles Council of Women Artists are also included. Ultimately, this exhibition celebrates a visionary who embraced change while never abandoning her truth.

James Jarvaise & Henry Taylor

In addition, James Jarvaise & Henry Taylor: Sometimes a Straight Line Has to Be Crooked also opens in the North A & B Galleries. This is the first show that features both the work of Henry Taylor and his teacher James Jarvaise. Although today, Taylor has received international acclaim, he began under the guidance of Jarvaise. The two shared a mutual respect that shaped Taylor’s early direction. In turn James Jarvaise (1924 – 2015) gained his owned national recognition in 1959. This came about when his abstract landscape paintings were featured in the historic exhibition Sixteen Americans at The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

While generations separated them, their creative spirits aligned. Jarvaise encouraged Taylor to trust his voice. This show spans works from the 1950s to today. It includes recent paintings Taylor created specifically for this project. His exploration of landscape and figure takes center stage.

For the first time, Taylor exhibits with Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles. He offers this tribute with reverence. Ultimately, Sometimes a Straight Line Has to Be Crooked celebrates a mentorship that changed two artistic lives forever.
