Craft in America presents two exhibitions. Los Angeles-based artist Karyl Sisson will be featured in a solo show. Part scavenger, part collector, and wholly meticulous craftsperson, Sisson’s work delves deeply into the possibilities that exist within the discarded and overlooked. Over the decades, Sisson has transformed familiar objects such as vintage zippers, clothespins, tape measures, buttons, and paper straws into abstract forms, vessels, and architectural structures. This exhibition will feature early works alongside her most recent creations–a glimpse into the oeuvre of this remarkable artist.

Also opening is Fiber Art Now’s annual juried exhibition of fiber-based artworks. This exhibition features highlights of the juried works from across the country in five categories: Wall/Floor Works, Sculptural Works, Vessel Forms/Basketry, Installation Works, and Wearables. The Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery presents COLA 2019, an exhibition featuring new work by Enrique Castrejon, Juan Capistrán, Kim Fisher, Sabrina Gschwandtner, Katie Grinnan, Alice Könitz, Olga Koumoundouros, Sandy Rodriguez, Stephanie Taylor, Peter Wu and Jenny Yurshansky. These eleven artists are the recipients of the 2019 City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship for visual arts. The Fellows were selected by a panel comprising curators, educators, museum directors and past COLA Fellows. The fellowship provides each artist with $10,000 to produce a new body of work, which will be premiered at the COLA 2019 exhibition. The exhibition will be accompanied by a public program as well as a catalog designed by Jody Zellen, a former COLA awardee. The opening will showcase a special performance of Katie Grinnan’s 5 Seconds of Dreaming, played by musicians Kozue Matsumoto and Eugene Moon at 3pm; See the website for more info.
