Book of Sand opens at Regen Projects with an opening art party on Wednesday September 16, 2026 from 6-8pm; The solo exhibition by Los Angeles artist Elliott Hundley features new paintings, sculptures, as well as a tapestry. Moreover, this is the artist’s seventh solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition takes its title from Jorge Luis Borges’ short story The Book of Sand. The book is known to suggest endless change and uncertainty. Likewise, Hundley’s works resist fixed interpretations through continual accumulation and transformation.

Hundley has previously explored Euripidean tragedies, Rilke’s sonnets, and also plays by Artaud and Genet in his previous exhibitions. However in Book of Sand the artist turns his attention toward his internal world and uses automatism to develop each work without a fixed narrative. He combines paint, paper, string, encaustic, pins, and found materials. Consequently, accumulation becomes both a process and a subject.
The exhibition also examines Jungian sand-play therapy and its connection to unconscious thought. This method uses miniature figures within sand trays to express experiences beyond language. Accordingly, Hundley frames some paintings to resemble sand trays. Meanwhile, the gallery functions as a psychological space for the works.
His sculptures incorporate objects with personal significance, which he alters through accumulated materials. For example, Palette (2024) combines concrete, steel, rope, wood, bone, feathers, and other materials. In addition, Hundley incorporates part of his mother’s wedding veil into the exhibition’s tapestry. Through this material, he connects memory, family history, identity, and maternal attachment.
Hundley has also participated in numerous museum exhibitions internationally. His recent solo exhibitions include the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Wexner Center, Nasher Sculpture Center, and Hammer Museum. Meanwhile, selected group exhibitions include Museo Jumex, The Broad, SFMOMA, MOCA, and Guggenheim Museum. He has also curated exhibitions at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and MOCA Los Angeles.
