Start early in Hollywood…

Kayne Griffin Corcoran offers an all day opening for two shows…”Wide Rule” an exhibition of new work by Italian artist Giulia Piscitelli and Easy Journey to other planets,” an exhibition of new works by Rosha Yaghmai.

“Wide Rule” includes a series of tapestries, sculptureSat-Mar-21-KayneGriffins, drawing, photographs, and a video work. The phrase ‘Wide Rule’ is taken from the cover of a typical American notebook, used simply to describe the spacing between the lines on each page. Separated individually, these two words seem to stand in opposition, yet together they suggest an openness to language and its interpretation. In this exhibition Piscitelli seeks, in her own words, to “give wideness to regulation.”

Easy Journey to other planets” will be Rosha Yaghmai’s first with the gallery. This group of new sculptures stems from Yaghmai’s ongoing experimentation with materials, in this instance incorporating ‘elemental’ substances—each found in its natural state on our planet and those beyond—such as graphite, iron, aluminum, neon, copper, nickel, bentonite clay, and mineral pigments.

Culver City…

Cherry and Martin hosts an art talk and Q&A with artist Pat O’Neill, conducted by curator and film preservationist Mark Toscano.

Sat-Mar21-CherryandMartinThis event will supplement O’Neill’s solo exhibition currently on view at Cherry and Martin through March 28th.

Long recognized as a pioneer in avant-garde film, Pat O’Neill is probably the first American to receive an MA in moving image art. O’Neill began his studies at UCLA in 1957, working with renowned designer Henry Dreyfuss. In the 1960s, O’Neill experimented with “serial projections of transparencies, followed by loop projections in 16mm film, and finally short films,” noting that this was “an extension of studio practice, using the film camera and projector in conventional and unconventional ways to make and present images over time.”

Back in Santa Monica…at Bergamot Station…

Pop into FIG to enjoy a solo exhibition. Lorraine Lubner’s recent paintings look to the horizon for inspiration.

See image: Lorraine Lubner “allegra” 2014, aSat-Mar21-FIG-LorraineLubnercrylic on canvas, 12 x 12″

More accurate, perhaps, is to say they focus on horizontals. While often suggestive of landscapes, Lubner’s paintings really examine more formal issues, especially the powerful impact of horizontal bands of color on our visual perception. Painted freehand, the artist centers her attention on the dynamic interaction of the horizontal bands which read as pulsating waves of light and color.

As deceptively simple as her paintings might seem in their imagery, they are abundantly complex in the depth of layering, investigation of color, and robust brushwork.

Patrick Painter premieres new work by Carlson Hatton.

Sat-Mar21-PatrickPainter-CarlsonHattonHatton’s work is ambitious in both scale and scope, and his multi-panel tableaus are a feast for the eyes. He discovered complex spatial relationships in the realm of cartoons long before he learned of the studied tenets of cubism.

In the worlds of cartoons and illustration, realistic scale is secondary; action is understood in swirling masses with an occasional fist or foot. His interest lies in those visual leaps of faith required to reconcile space that is not easily understood.  Hatton’s work explores what he calls the symbiotic relation or fusion of environment and figure, the passage of time, and the glow of light suggesting celestial intervention.

Anna Meliksetian and Michael Briggs are pleased to present Remainder, a solo exhibition of new works by Los Angeles based artist Cody Trepte.

Sat-Mar21-MeliksetianBriggs-CT-Library-2015-for-webIn 1953, amateur magician Paul Curry invented a puzzle in which a triangle divided into six segments can be rearranged into a new triangle occupying the same space. The pieces of the original form are cleanly redistributed to produce the new triangle, except that there is the strange result that there are now two extra spaces — two “somethings” from where once there was nothing.

Taking this puzzle as the starting point for the exhibition, Trepte highlights what’s left over as a site of paradox. Remainder consists of photographs, drawings, and a 16mm film. The two large photo-based images, considered drawings by the artist, are made by photographing works on paper of dots, numbers, and arrows. These images simultaneously reference the cellular and the cosmic, maps, movement, and instruction.

See image: Dani Tull Odyssey (detail Sat-Mar21-LAMGallery-DaniTullstatic1.squarespace.cominstallation view), 2015, mixed media, dimensions variable

Dani Tull has cultivated a production process that achieves a symbiosis between aestheticized formalist principles and an exploration into the subconscious mind and aspects of transpersonal psychology. The results take form as paintings, sculptures and installations that unfold an allegory that is both esoteric and emblematic of our collective contemporary human experience.
