Craig Krull Gallery hosts the closing reception for “Paint is a Thing,” a group Sat-July9-2016-CraigKrull-KeenanDerbyexhibition curated by Beth Parker.

See image: by Keenan Derby

This exhibition showcases seven contemporary artists who use paint to create both an object and an illusionistic space.  While these artists embrace the materiality of paint, they also depict images and narratives, allowing the paintings to become more than purely objects.  Each piece incites a layered read, with a visceral reaction to the physicality of the surface, as well as a cerebral reaction to the illusion described.

Artists include: Mark Posey, Keenan Derby, Riin Kaljurand, Chrissy Angliker, and Dominic Terlizz.

Sloan Projects hosts three events at Bergamot tonight…one at its B-5 gallery and another its new A-5 space. Plus enjoy a pop up drive-in screening with an installation set to be projected on the D building (where TAG, Andew Weiss galleries, etc., are located) by Alia Malley. Rail riders can also partake in the experience.

Head to the B building first for the closing reception of “WORK / W=Fd” a multimedia installation by Isabelle Harada. FYI – Its a fantastic installation.

“WORK / W=Fd” consists of 999 golden paper cranes suspended from the ceiling and a looped projection on a single unfolded sheet, bathed in an artificial sunset. An allusion to the Japanese tradition of the origami crane and its mythical origin, the installation explores the nature of time and energy in terms of materiality and the virtual. Don’t forget to pop by Sloan Project’s brand new space and annex at A-5 to view “Recent Findings” a group exhibition of photography and video.”

The artist will project her short video, “Christmas Eve in Panorama City” onto the D Building in the central parking lot of Bergamot Station, transforming the art complex into a classic Southern California drive-in and unifying the experience between the thriving arts community and rail passengers of the new Expo Line.

This projection will run nightly from 8pm – midnight from Wednesday, August 17 through Wednesday, August 24 and will start at 7:30 pm on August 20th so viewers can gather and enjoy watching the skies darken and the pop-up drive-in come alive.

Thinkspace is pleased to present new works by Kevin Peterson in Sovereign, the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. The Houston-based painter is known for his hyperrealistic works in which urban sprawls and rough city landscapes are offset by innocent subjects.
