Ethan Gill, Checking the Temperature, 2019, oil on canvas, 60 x 60 in.

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles premieres “ETHAN GILL: New Paintings.” Gill’s new paintings present the pool as a psychological space, permeated by west coast light and used to reflect upon form, memory, and isolation. The paintings depict figures in swimming pools: legs, feet, and partial views of bodies caught in the act of submerging or at rest as the movement of light and water interrupt the figure and graph of tiles. As he paints without visual references, both figuration and abstraction emerge from within the grid in the process, allowing the subconscious to materialize form. Light, color, and refraction overtake the order of intersecting vectors. The heft and weight of a body as it succumbs to the water, hemmed in by tight framing crops or morphing into tessellated shapes, displace the water, disrupt the grid, and unmoor the body from physics and form.

Then cross La Cienega…(don’t forget to use the cross walk), to pop into Walter Maciel Gallery. ” TAKE AWAY” by Nike Schröder marks her fourth solo show with the gallery. Schröder is a multi disciplinary artist who settled in Los Angeles eight years ago from Germany, her native country. The overall theme of Schröder’s new work relates to her female identity exploring notions of sensuality, nurturing, inclusivity, motherhood and power.  Presented as a cohesive series, the show includes paintings, stitched portraits, bronze and porcelain sculpture and ceiling installation based work made out of soft sculpture with porcelain.

Philip Martin Gallery presents Michael Rey’s third exhibition at the gallery. Michael Rey describes his artwork as drawing and sculptural wall works. He begins with a practice of automatic drawings—an open-ended method developed in the early 20th Century. “The drawing is a very intuitive process for me, I usually try to conjure up a shape from a blank page in my sketchbook. Sometimes I’ll draw different shapes on the same page to play one off another; I’ll try to Frankenstein different parts of shapes on the same page. Sometimes I’ll draw just one shape on a page and that’s it. I make an effort to keep the process as spontaneous as possible, so I stick with first intuitions and try to avoid revision…After that, it’s a question of realizing these drawings as painted reliefs. Here too, I try to keep the process intuitive, letting myself be guided by the tactility of the materials.”
