achofner Gallery presents “Scholar Books,” an exhibition of work by Venice Beach-based artist Jean Edelstein.

The history of Chinese painting, specifically that of the handscroll, is centered on the format and the packaging of the paintings. Unfurling a scroll was an intimate and anticipatory experience; each part of the scroll revealed something new as a continuous depiction of a narrative unfolded. This revelatory experience was ceremonial and the paintings were handled with care as the viewer admired and studied each section, from right to left. Then, they repeated the process to continue the narrative and discover new visual progressions.
Also opening tonight is Leaf In The Light, an exhibition of new work by Beijing-based artist, Barbara Edelstein. There will be a reception for the artist Saturday, January 16, 4-6 PM.

Gallery Luisotti is delighted to announce Lago, Ron Jude’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. Lago is a project developed from 2011-2015 in the deserts of Southern California.
Jude has described his recollection of this once idyllic resort environ as being more like disjointed flashes as opposed to fully formed narrative memories. He also recalls the unexpected hostility of the desert environment, not only its brutal temperatures but as the place where he first encountered death, loss and isolation. These modes of experience condition Lago, both as a photobook and as an exhibition.

Gallery 169 is proud to present “TWO DEGREES CELSIUS?” new works by Jessie Homer French.
Je
ssie Homer French was born in New York in 1940. Over the last five decades, with little formal training, Jessie has developed her own regional narrative style. She has had many solo exhibitions at Los Angeles and Victoria, BC galleries. Her work has also been featured in numerous group shows here in California and in Canada. She has been profiled in print and on television.
Many of her paintings are permanently displayed in government buildings, hospitals, and hotels, and are also part of scores of private collections. About the paintings on display at gallery 169 Jessie states the following:
“These fire paintings, hung at eye level, are mostly horizontally long and vertically short as if seen from a military pillbox with shooting slit windows. Seeing all the fires of the last years on TV I felt as though I was in that pillbox watching the world burn. Global Warming – will it stop at 2 degrees Celsius?”
“TWO DEGREES CELSIUS?” will be on view at Gallery 169 from
January 16th – February, 2016.

The G2 Gallery will be kicking off their 2016, four-part series, 100 Years of National Parks with The North East. It will open alongside Ansel Adams Portfolio II: The National Parks and Monuments and will feature NPS-maintained areas in the northeastern United States. An open call for photographers resulted in 10 talented artists being chosen for the show, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the NPS.

What possible connection could early ’90’s Chicano gangsters in Los Angeles have with queer Black youth from the East Coast in 2015? Approaching their subjects from opposite sides of the country, working some twenty years apart, Salomón Huerta and Devan Shimoyama independently reveal a common archetype across disparate cultures and decades. In their work, “abjectness and recovered beauty are a parallel to the messiness of being male but also being human,” as Toro Castaño observed. They speak in the language of classical mythology and contemporary stereotype to illuminate a small fraction of what it means to be a young man in search of his own identity. The placement of these two artists in adjacent galleries reveals the explicit yet often overshadowed foundations: separating and comparing the social environment as cause and camouflage for so much of what becomes a man.

MIM Gallery presentd “This Is What Is Not,” a group show with Los Angeles-based artists.
“This Is What Is Not” consists of drawings, photographs, collages, sculptures, and installations by Christina Hendershaw, Lauren Fejarang, Son Vo, and Yael Nov. The artists in this exhibition use a variety of materials and techniques so as to reflect upon the polarity between surface and material.
Christina Hendershaw received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her MFA from Otis College of Art and Design. Lauren Fejarang received her BA from University of Washington and her MFA from Art Center College of Design. Son Vo received his BFA from UCSD and his MFA from Art Center College of Design. aul Loya welcomes New York City-based artist Erik Foss and San Francisco-based artist Joe Roberts who will show their body of collaborative drawings and mixed media artworks tonight. Foss and Roberts began collaborating in 2011 immediately after meeting, working together in Foss’s New York City studio and sending drawings back and forth through the mail between the two coasts. The show will also include a collaborative sculpture in the shape of a pyramid made in Los Angeles from both artists’ reference material.
Their collaboration is rooted in a shared interest in and inspiration by politics, comics, conspiracy theory, skateboarding, psychedelic, and counter culture. The contrast of innocence and degradation is a central vein found in their collaboration. Amongst smiley faces and Looney Tune-esque characters are abstract images of “ adult material” appropriated from vintage magazines, depictions of Middle Eastern architecture amongst more benign, childlike drawings of our favorite cartoon characters, and psychedelic symbolism. Foss and Roberts’ collaboration alludes to Western society’s tendency to wrap themselves in warm blanket of false, saccharine happiness and escapism while turning a blind eye to the evils of everyday life that covertly consumes our innocence.

Multiple Feeds is an online and gallery video presentation with a unique design that allows the viewing audience to create and post their own video content in response to the videos by LAAA artists.

LAUNCH LA is proud to present, “Contemporary Nostalgia,” a new exhibition featuring Danny Galieote and Antonio Pelayo. This exhibition features two artists with distinct stylistic and personal backgrounds. Viewed side by side however, Pelayo and Galieote’s works are a tribute to the allure of the past, whether it be familial or historical.

Galieote’s sense of nostalgia is primarily cultural – fuelled by the desire to recapture some of the artistry, spirit and aesthetics of bygone epochs. Drawing on everything from American Regionalism, 1950s pop-culture and the works of Italian Renaissance painters, he distils the artistic themes and styles of these periods into essences, to be mixed and experimented with at will. The result however is far from slavish imitation, but rather a point of departure into new artistic territory. Prominent Regionalists like Thomas Hart Benton, Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry tried to capture the lives of the everyday American men and women, even if at times they had to document gritty scenes and difficult moments. In a sense, Galieote continues their legacy by doing the same for his generation – approaching the subject in a stylized, poetic and yet intrinsically faithful manner.

nearthed by John Maloof in 2007 at a local auction house in Chicago, Vivian Maier is only now beginning to be recognized as one of the most iconic street photographers of the 20th Century. A body of work that spans not only the US, but the globe, Maier shot more than 100,000 negatives representing the street life of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and the American Southwest, as well as destinations as far off as Manila, Bangkok, Beijing, Egypt, and Italy.

Invested in her bird’s eye view of the people who made industrious cities thrive and pulse, Maier captures gentle and poignant moments between parents and children, the disenfranchised and forgotten, in a country on the verge of social and political upheaval. Maier’s uncanny ability to capture the right frame at exactly the right moment, with elements of lighting, movement and composition in harmonious balance, is revealed in the remarkable fact that she seldom shot more than one picture of the same moment in time. An intensely private person who kept most of her work hidden under lock and key, Maier also indulged her passion for documenting the world around her through homemade films, recordings and collections, assembling one of the most fascinating windows into American life in the second half of the twentieth century.

CES Gallery is pleased to present “Deep Superficial Perceptions,” a group exhibition that surveys ongoing studio explorations of material experiments in two dimensional formats. The history of image making inevitably begins with painting. This process becomes increasingly complicated as technology evolves, as perception is altered by media, beginning with the invention of photographic methods and now rapidly changing with the flow of the Internet.

“Ju
ngle Drums”–the new collection (featuring 15 paintings, including sculptures and masks) from Southern California painter, illustrator and designer Josh Agle aka SHAG–debuts tonight in the main gallery of COREY HELFORD GALLERY’s new 12,000 square foot space in Downtown Los Angeles.
Also opening is Hikari Shimoda’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, entitled “Recycling Humanity”. The exhibition explores the Buddhist notion of “samsara”, the never-ending cycle of life and death and will feature two new series, “Children on the Edge” and “Children of Emptiness”.
Corey Helford Gallery will also be unveiling an exciting group exhibition titled “Asymmetrical Diptych Party” in Gallery 3. This exhibition will feature a series of diptychs created by over 25 renowned artists working in the New Contemporary scene.

Subliminal Projects presens “Modular Synthesis,” a solo exhibition featuring work by Brooklyn-based artist Steve Keene. The works included in this exhibition are heavily influenced and inspired by influential bands and musicians. The artist pays tribute to some of the most important album art of all time including pieces in honor of The Rolling Stones, The Clash, Bob Dylan, Joy Division and many others.
Here are a few words from our founder Shepard Fairey about Steve Keene’s work and upcoming show here at Subliminal: “When I discovered the work of Steve Keene in the 90’s I was fascinated by his process of working quickly to create multiple versions of paintings that would allow him to keep the prices low, yet make each painting an original. I soon realized that he was addressing a lot of the coolest indie scene subject matter and that from any of my diverse interests there was probably some connection only a few degrees of separation from Keene. I’m really excited about the work he’s doing for “Modular Synthesis,” his show opening at our gallery Subliminal Projects later this month. The exhibition will feature his interpretations of classic album covers and hip Los Angeles landmarks, as well as the debut of his Tattooed Plywood pieces.
