CB1 Gallery is proud to present a retrospective of prints and drawings by Tom Knechtel from the last 35 years, The Reader of His Own Self. The exhibition, presented in cooperation with Marc Selwyn Fine Art, includes prints and drawings from 1979 – 2016, as well as two new etchings published by CB1 Gallery.
Sat-Sept-10-2016-CB1-TomKnechtel
The CB1 Gallery print and drawing survey, The Reader of His Own Self, follows the artist’s interest in images dealing with romance/identity/sexuality, to images inspired from trips to India, to the most current work that deals with the self-portrait and the artist’s immediate family. These self-portraits were principally realized as drawings created in Los Angeles and Berlin, where the artist worked for several months in the winter of 2015-2016.

Also opening at CB1 Gallery…Mira Schor’s upcoming solo exhibition WAR FRIEZE. This will be the most comprehensive presentation of a major multi-canvas painting installation on the theme of militarism and aggression, conceived and begun by the artist in the immediate aftermath of the First Gulf War in the winter of 1991 and completed in 1994.

Sat-Sept-10-2016-Skidmore-BrightonSmith
Bookend with Gucci, 2016, Watercolor on paper, 22″ x 30″

Brighton Smith’s Stacks are meditations on the deep connections in our society between art and fashion. His typical format features piles of coffee table books on the history of art, style and culture. They are usually topped by an iconic fashion statement—a high heeled shoe by a famed designer such as Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, or Christian Louboutin. The juxtapositions are witty, provocative and capture the universal appeal of fascinating art and extraordinary design.

Bradley Hankey first starting painting images of California when he moved to Los Angeles in 2009 and hasn’t stopped since. Here is some info from the artist…”I see potential paintings every day. I could never paint all of them in my lifetime. My paintings are my way of trying to make sense of the world around me—more specifically, Los Angeles and California. There is so much beauty here that I am convinced I will have subject matter for the rest of my life.

Sloan Projects presents two new exhibitions…”Rebeca Puga : New Paintings,” in the main gallery (B-5), and “Body of Research” in the gallery’s annex space at A-5. Both receptions run from 5-7pm.

The paintings of Chilean-born artist Rebeca Puga are based on her investigations into how we see and experience the space that surrounds us and how that parallels our consciousness and perception of time. Her canvases possess a dynamic sense of incompletion, where line and shape are continually coming into definition. Puga embues her work with a high level of gestural energy, constantly reworking her paintings until they vibrate with a sense of expansion and erasure, coming and going, being and unbecoming.

Inspired by the new Metro line and changes underway at Bergamot Station, bG Gallery presents the fall curatorial “Transported.”

Sat-Sept10-2016-bGGallery-GaySummerRick-EastboundtoDowntownSee image: Gay Summer Rick, “Eastbound to Downtown,” oil on canvas, 40×30 inches

The exhibition considers travel as inherently transformative, literally and figuratively. Between the points of here and there, time passes, the scenery blurs and every moment in motion is the arrival and departure of a new location. Though the final destination may be foreign and potentially inhospitable, transcendance can be had by seeking beauty within the journey.

BG Gallery presents bodies of work by four artists whose work is informed by transportation – Gay Summer Rick, Susie Loucks, Danielle Eubank, and Tatiana Botton.

Tatiana Botton takes herself to remote locations and brings back stunning photographs of places most people would otherwise never see. Danielle Eubank paints the ocean waters and ice floes she encountered on an expedition to the Arctic Circle. Susie Loucks uses motion to transport the viewer to a new local by blurring the surface of familiar places. Gay Summer Rick uses her signature palette knife style to explore the essence of the commuter’s environment on the Metro lines, streets and freeways of Los Angeles County.

Sat-Sept-10-2016-GeorgeBillisGeorge Billis Gallery is pleased to present “Properties of Light,” curated by William Moreno. “Properties of Light” features new work by two Los Angeles artists, painter Suzan Woodruff and sculptor Brad Howe, paired in an extraordinarily radiant exhibition.

Brad Howe, best known for his monumental abstract sculptures, balances strength and wit, motion and stillness, and a sense of lightness even when working with heavy steel.

Suzan Woodruff paints luminous and provocative abstractions that take full advantage of Los Angeles’ copious light. Not interested in a hard-edged proposition, her works are less foils than empathetic companions to Howe’s shimmering compatriots. In this exhibit, his highly reflective sculptural works are deliberately scaled and placed to provoke interaction and conversation with Woodruff’s sensorial paintings. The result is unapologetically energizing – a paean to Los Angeles’ unique light qualities.
