Or Head Downtown…

June6-CB1-EdithBeaucage-ByMorningWeJumpedIntothe-CrispWater-2015Oiloncanvas-60x48Edith Beaucage’s third solo exhibition at CB1 Galler, Chill Bivouac Rhymes features paintings and mixed media objects. The exhibition invites you to follow a small group of teens at a rave concert. A young Bolshoi ballerina, Ekaterina becomes a rave bunny and escapes her Russian lover to venture in cutting shapes with a young surfer from Bora Bora.

See image: Edith Beaucage, By Morning We Jumped Into the Crisp Water, 2015, Oil on canvas, 60″ x 48″

All the images visually rhyme with one another around a central bivouac; a campsite in the woods where the Rave is happening. The rhymes are geometric elements that are both color and sound. The viewer will discover the paintings by looking through sculptures and painting installation. Twelve feet tall multicolor trees, an octagon geometric shape and freestanding painted campers are installed on the gallery floor to produce a deep focus space.

Or in Santa Monica…Head to Bergamot Station (2525 Michigan Ave., SM), where the Pick of the Week takes place.

TAG Gallery (at Bergamot Station, SM) hosts an art talk today in conjunction with its current exhibitions featuring the art of Gary Polonsky, Katie Crown, Joan Ransohoff and Tom Wheeler.

Gary Polonsky features new works from his Food series. Breaking from the flat surface of traditional painting, Gary Polonsky brings three-dimensional painting to a new level of depth and focus as he revisits his food series.

Katie Crown’s new paintings of audiences are an extension of her earlier ceramic sculptures of audiences and her paintings of people in other group settings. She goes for humor in all these works, now with a palette from black to white.

JTAG-Joan-Ransohoffoan Ransohoff’s exhibit titled “Postcards from the Field” features original paintings which were created on location. The works were inspired by the artist’s travels around the country, particularly California, Idaho, Utah, Washington, Connecticut, New York and the Hudson River Valley.

See image: Joan Ransohoff, Ojai Valley, Oil on Board, 8 x 10 in.

“Into the Night” features the work or Tom Wheeler. Wheeler likes to light things up, literally, and with flashlights.

That is probably a good thing, or maybe a necessity, because he is a landscape photographer who works in complete darkness.

Save the date, Saturday, June 6, 3 pm for an Artist Talk!

Skidmore Contemporary Art presents “Clay Vorhes: Trapeze.” Clay Vorhes creates paintings that skirt the line between representation and abstraction. When seen from afar, these arresting images seem like nonobjective compositions.

June6-skidmore-ClayVorhes-Trapeze-38-detail-2015-oil-on-canvas-24x48See image: Trapeze #38 (detail), 2015, oil on canvas, 24″ x 48″

The network of lines that thrust across each canvas harks back to the taut, haunting geometries of Richard Diebenkorn’s Ocean Park series. As one moves closer, however, it soon becomes clear that these paintings are populated by small figures that hang, leap and suspend precariously from the linear frame. These people are performers–acrobats, divers, gymnasts and dancers.

Sat-June6-RuthBachofner-LauraFayerLaura Fayer’s mixed media paintings are inspired by observations of landscapes, nature, and impressions from daily observances. Fayer approaches her work with a loose sense of structure that is interjected with intuition.

Regen Projects presents “Three Young Framers,” an exhibition of new work by New York-based artist Rachel Harrison.

Sat-June6-RegenProjects-Rachel-HarrisonThe exhibition reflects on what it means to frame a subject, in a time when subjects tend to frame themselves.

A group of painted, abstract sculptures will congregate in the gallery, posing with selfie sticks like some sci-fi teen or tourist lifeforms. Metal studs erected in and around the perimeter of Regen Projects will also physically crop and frame the white cube, while nodding to Michael Asher’s 2008 Santa Monica Museum installation.

In the back of the room, a reprise of Harrison’s Marilyn with Wall (2004) will be hung on a discarded, former gallery wall. And in a separate space, the artist will debut FOMO (2015), a set of thirty-four iPhone photos documenting footprints left in the snow.

Sat-June6-Wallspace“FEMO” is an extension of Queer Biennial I, which took place in Los Angeles, and Miami in 2014. That exhibition included work from LGBTQ artists from all over the Country.

The focus of FEMO is an effort to understand the workings of queer-identified artists in Los Angeles, today. Specifically, those who use performance and installation as an integral part of their art. Their common thread is a keen awareness of the body in all its states of being and transformation.

This creative FEMO group explores a contemporary sense of polysexual existential questioning of the here and now. Works include fiber art, photography, sculpture, video and live performance. As curator, it is my hope that I can help these artists sharpen the focus of their vision, and facilitate, champion and document their efforts.
