In Culver City…

At 4 pm, stop by Samuel Freeman for a conversation between Clarissa Tossin and Michael Ned Holte, to celebrate the release of Tossin’s first publication, Unmapping the World. This exhibition is exquisite, btw…I attended the opening.

HeSat-June13-SamuelFreeman-ClarissaTossinre is some info from the gallery about the book…Unmapping the World is organized around a set of works produced by Clarissa Tossin over a period of five years during artist residencies, and commissioned by Brazilian and North American art institutions. Driven by the curiosity of the artist-anthropologist, Tossin’s works are formed through analysis of the politics of space and urban spaces, as well as interrogations into the mappings and discourses of power, relationships of consumption and identity, circulations of symbols and ideas, and the role of architecture—particularly that of Brasília, a modernist monument that she has come to call ‘home.’ Tossin’s objects, videos, and installations explore a broad and intricate spectrum of desires, impasses, and utopias, while also establishing their own expressive logic, above and beyond these topics.

The book is bilingual, in English and Portuguese, and includes texts by Moacir dos Anjos, Michael Ned Holte, and Guilherme Wisnik. The publication has been made possible by a fellowship from the California Community Foundation.

Historically artists have relieved long hours of isolation in the company of their peers. The Ashcan School, the School of Paris and New York’s mass of Post-War Abstract Expressionists are all examples of such camaraderie. But few, if any, women artists are found in the photos, records and collections relating to these movements.

Artists include: Wangechi Mutu, Sue Wong, Madam X, Cathy Weiss, Linda Vallejo, Kristine Schomaker, Megan Whitmarsh, Sarah Stieber, Linda Smith, Erin Reiter, Courtney Reid, Gay Summer Rick, Allie Pohl, Trinity Martin, Nancy Larrew, Michelle Lilly, Mia Loucks, Kate Jackson, Brenda Jamrus, Simone Gad, Carol Friedman, MK Decca, Wini Brewer, Terri Berman, Nora Berman, and Sofia Arreguin.
