Its your last chance to see “Book of the Dad,” an exhibSat-Jan10-2015-theBookoftheDaD-Juriit featuring the  work of George Koll (1941-2013) at the Mike Kelley Gallery at Beyond Baroque. The exhibition also features artist Juri Koll’s work as well. George Koll, (father of Juri) lived an alternative life in the underground of San Francisco, and his writings and art are testimony to his life.

See my interview with Juri Koll featured in this week’s Argonaut Newspaper.

Koll Senior survived, – sometimes thrived – under the radar and longer than most, if not all, of his friends and contemporaries of the Beat Generation, the 60s, 70s and beyond. Free, but donations always appreciated.

Hoffman’s aim with this body of work is to explore and renew the unexpected and sometimes unwelcomed transitions.

In her exhibit, “Reality,” Joan Wynn features sculptures that are inspired by her own life and by universal experience. Distilling memories from her past, Wynn creates figures and symbols that reflect isolation and longing.

And finally, With her latest body of work, artist Joan Horsfall Young contemplates the qualities that render something pretty.

There are a couple more in Santa Monica…

Gallery 169 hosts and art talk with a Q&A and slideshow in conjunction with its current exhibition, THE POACHING WARS which opened last week. The documentary photo exhibition features the struggle to stop rhino and elephant poaching in Africa.

Frank af Petersens is a SweSat-Jan24-Gallery169-Frank-af-Petersensdish professional photographer with a background in Africa. He has spent several years documenting the rapidly escalating poaching crisis.

Killing Africa’s rhinos and elephants is now a multi-billion dollar industry, controlled by groups with links to terrorist organizations and global criminal networks. Rhino horn is highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine, and is worth more than gold in Vietnam and other countries in Southeast Asia. 1,120 rhinos were killed by poachers in South Africa in 2014, a dramatic increase from 13 rhinos killed in 2007.

The salon at automatic sweat is pleased to announce American Remains, an exhibition of sculptures and installations by SeMeN SPeRmS and Nick Stewart.

TSat-Jan31-2015-AutomaticSweathe exhibition presents a collection of artifacts from a proposed mythology that straddles the indistinct line between American history and rural legend. Inspired by the decrepit highway-side nowhere towns of the southwest, the works offer warped satellite dishes and abandoned single-wide trailers as the weathered remnants of westward expansion. These ubiquitous emblems of a proud historical narrative about a prosperous America are presented alongside idiosyncratic icons of contemporary desert folklore, characterized by supernatural suspicion, eerie phenomena and UFO sightings.

Legendary artist Betty Woodman is widely celebrated for her exuberant and vivid ceramic works that defy categorization as painting, sculpture, or pottery. Her singular experimentation with the vase form, as a contemplative and pictorial, as well as functional object, spans over fifty years—from producing utilitarian pots in the 1950s, to collaborations with the Pattern and Decoration movement in the late 1970s and 1980s, to her 2006 exhibition at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, the institution’s first (and only) for a living artist working in ceramics, and its first (and only) retrospective for a living woman artist.
