Our Pick of the Week takes place tonight at Bergamot Station…see below for other openings happening at Bergamot…

In Marina Del Rey

StJune14-Uncle Darrows-FathersDayart celebrating Father’s Day early this weekend at Uncle Darrow’s. Each year Uncle Darrow’s throw’s a Dad’s Day bash…If you’ve never been to its annual outdoor party…You gotta come on down.  Bring the whole family. It runs from 2-5pm. You can read more about this on our Upcoming Page. I also wrote an article about the origins of Uncle Darrow’s for this week’s Santa Monica Mirror.

The Country Legends will be performing some classic country, such as Johnny Cash, June Carter, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Willie Neslson, Loretta Lynn, and lots more. We will even do some blues….Janis Joplin, B.B. King for you blues lovers.

The food as always will be exceptional. Uncle Darrow’s has been “THE” place to go for tasty Cajun and Creole classics. One of the favorites on the menu is its gumbo (served on weekends only) which spotlights the farm raised seafood. Also unlike most southern cooking…Uncle Darrow’s offer a healthier option…using chicken or turkey sausage instead of pork or beef. Expect fresh baked bread each day and great southern flavors with no lard!

The event is FREE; Uncle Darrow’s will be offering the standard menu, plus a crawfish boil with the corn and potatoes that day for the Dad’s (cost should be around $20). The Country Legends will be singing classic country and some blues from 2-5pm.

The Country Legends include Greg Cruz (vocals/guitar), Kathy Leonardo (vocals), Petr Hrodmadko (stand-up bass), & Mitch Montrose (drums). For more information about the Country Legends, see LAArtParty’s LAArtParty’s FB Page.

bG Gallery holds a second reception for “Three-Winged Chrysalis.” The group exhibition showcases 20th and 21st Century artworks of metamorphosis and transmutation.

The exhibit brings together artists exploring worlds in flux, depicting subjects caught between two states. Shifting perspectives tilt familiar landscapes, ordinary objects appear in unexpected places and routine rites of passage are turned into peculiar rituals.

lowres-May24-bGGallery-StephanieVisser photo-34.bPresented with imagery of unresolved transformation, the viewer must anticipate what the final form will be, offering their own unconscious an opportunity to fill in the blanks.

In Venice…

The G2 Gallery premieres three exhibitions tonight.  The Owens Lake Project by Robin Black, a photographic exploration of Owens Lake’s history, surrounding environment and current threatened status.

Owens Lake is a closed drainage basin off the Owens River. More than 38 million people rely on the water that has come through the Los Angeles Aqueduct via diversion of the Owens River for the past 100 years. This consistent diversion of water has left the once-vibrant Owens Lake almost completely dry, and the dried-out bed is the single largest source of dust pollution in the United States.

Nature LA: Water, a diverse yet thematically unified exhibit from a quartet of talented photographers all based in Los Angeles. The group show features images from four aesthetically diverse photographers: Larry Brownstein, Nathanial Havholm, Michael Miner and Buddy Weiss. All of the photographs in the exhibit will focus on water in its various forms – crashing waves, calm bays, undersea vistas and more. The collection of images is linked through its overarching reverence for a resource that is desperately lacking in the region.

Also enjoy the work of Eric Joseph in a new solo exhibition.

On view: June 10 – July 27,  20 14; Admission is $10 at the door and includes wine, hors d’oeuvres and complimentary valet in front of the gallery.

All proceeds from admissions will be donated to Audubon California.

For this exhibition, “Above All Else,” Darling continues to develop his popular ‘Airplane Window’ Series – an engaging collection of life-size, hand sculpted woodwork “windows”, framing fluid landscapes created by the artist’s stylized aerosol and acrylic technique.

The exhibition “Resistencia” builds on the “VINZ FEEL FREE” project – which has fueled an ambitious street campaign that includes powerful, life size mixed media collages installed in the urban environments where civil liberties are manipulated and controlled every day.

Centrifuge features artists who explore the complexity of contemporary life in Israel through its peripheral communities. Rather than depicting the country as a unified or stable entity,Centrifuge presents work that expressly engages the multiplicity of Israeli identities – whether ethnic, religious, cultural or political – and the vying forces that push some communities to society’s edges and others to its center.

Massard is known for his imaginative, highly elaborately fabricated photographs that record meticulously crafted and masterfully lit studio constructions.

Massard has remained faithful to this intensive studio practice and ruminates that “each image is the completion of an inner imaginary journey.”

Also in Culver City, continue to Washington Blvd….

Prohibition Gallery is presents “Archetype to Stereotype,” a new exhibition of paintings by Wyatt Mills. This is second solo exhibit at the gallery.

KSat-June14-Prohibition-WyattMillsnown for his visceral brush strokes and thought provoking themes, Mills’ new work explores how ancient icons have popped up in today’s society and the impact that their modern incarnations make upon the culture as a whole.

Using oil paint, mixed media, and dark comedy, Mills juxtaposes ancient deities with their modern day equivalents. “Today’s society has manipulated these old icons relentlessly and superfluously. Not only are many car models, make-up brands, shoe companies, etc. designed to evoke ancient gods, but many celebrities and people in power also end up impersonating them.”

The much anticipated opening of “Back in the Night” featuring the work of Scott Ewalt finally takes place at Hinge Modern.

This opening had to be postponed twice…last week’s was at the last minute. I called the gallery PERSONALLY to find out if it was indeed going to happen. Here is the gallery’s response.

“T
Sat-June6-HingeModernhe artwork was picked up from the artist, Scott Ewalt, in NYC on May 2nd and was scheduled to arrive at the gallery on May 28th. The company, Jet Moving Systems, engaged in some highly unethical behavior and misled us repeatedly about the artwork’s location. We were told over and over that it was going to arrive “tomorrow”. But it finally arrived on Wednesday so, yes, we are certain about this date.”

This one sounds like a fun art party…it’s a long awaited opening with burlesque performers too.
