Michael Kohn Gallery celebrated its 40th Anniversary Exhibition on February 19, 2025. But not to worry, if you missed the opening art party. This exhibition runs through April 4, 2025. The group show feature diverse works by iconic artists Keith Haring, Chiffon Thomas, Alicia Adamerovich, Matha Alf as well as many more. A special section of the gallery will turn into a theater to present the restored version of Bruce Conner’s THE WHITE ROSE, originally from 1967.
Kohn Gallery 40 Anniversary
In 1985, Michael Kohn Gallery (MKG) opened on Robertson Boulevard in West Hollywood. The inaugural show, New York’s Finest, introduced artists from New York like Kenny Scharf and Futura 2000. After spending five years in New York as an art critic and graduate student at NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, Kohn returned to Los Angeles. This first exhibition highlighted his East Coast connections and set the tone for future programs.

Over the years, MKG has hosted solo and group exhibitions for many influential modern and contemporary artists. These include Peter Halley, Christopher Wool, Richard Tuttle, Marsden Hartley, and Mark Innerst. Other notable names include Andy Warhol, Joan Nelson, Mark Tansey, Richard Pettibone, Bruce Conner, and Lita Albuquerque. The gallery also showcased iconic pairings like “Twombly and Basquiat” and “Morandi and Ryman.” More recently, the gallery featured Dennis Hopper, Alex Katz, James Rosenquist, Gonzalo Lebrija, and Mark Ryden.
In the past decade, MKG has strengthened its focus on emerging and mid-career artists with an international outlook. This dedication reflects MKG’s ongoing commitment to artistic innovation and global perspectives.
Kohn Gallery Exhibitions
MKG’s curatorial approach spans centuries of art history. The collection ranges from 16th-century Italian Mannerist pieces to works on paper by Cezanne and Picasso. American Modernists like Marsden Hartley and Arthur Dove, along with Minimalists such as Donald Judd and Carl Andre, further enrich the gallery’s diverse offerings. The gallery has also spotlighted contemporary artists who shaped the Los Angeles art scene over the last 40 years.
As Los Angeles’s art scene expands, Michael Kohn Gallery remains a key influence in the city’s cultural landscape. Beyond exhibitions, Kohn actively supports the arts, contributing to the city’s cultural growth and the careers of the artists he represents. This milestone exhibition honors the gallery’s legacy while embracing new artistic horizons.
