In Santa Monica…

haleARTS is pleased to present “Icon” featuring the work of Judy Ragagli.

RagFri-Sat-Dec9-10-2016-haleArtsagli’s oil paintings are so life-like, many people have mistaken them for photographs. In order to achieve accurate tonal properties of Barbie’s plastic flesh.

Ragagli employs an arduous process of specialized mixing of oil colors that few artists have been able to master. Using only seven original color tubes of oil, she is able to precisely translate the vast and scintillating color properties of Barbie’s skin, hair, make-up and wardrobe as they interact with reflective light.

The effect of her process and style culminates in a cohesive vision of the beauty and grace of Barbie and the artist’s own commentary on the significance of this great American Icon.

In Hollywood…

Last Projects hosts an opening reception for “Land of the Smokes: Landscapes and Los Angeles.”

Los Angeles based artists look at the landscape as metaphor, allegory, and reflection. In the 16th century when the Spanish explorers viewed the coast off present-day Los Angeles, they witnessed forest fires in the hills above San Pedro harbor. The native Americans referred to the Los Angeles landscape as the “Land of the Smokes.” The relationship between “smoke” and the Los Angeles landscape is also a metaphor between a place that always teeters on disaster, and the use of smoke to create a fantasy; that which blurs the line between the reality and fiction.

Artists include: Sandow Birk, Jaime Becker, Andrea Brown, Franco Castilla, Alika Cooper, Alice Könitz, Laida Lertxundi, Julie Orr, Katie Shapiro, Andrew K. Thompson, Jenny Yurshansky.
