In Culver City…..

Cherry Martin celebrates the work of renowned artist Robert Heinecken. “Waking Up in News America” is a significant work that has not been seen in almost two decades. The room-sized installation investigates two of Heinecken’s deep concerns: mass media and the affects of one particular form of mass media–the television.

WU CherryMartin RobertHeinecken“Waking Up in News America” is a room in which every surface–the walls and floors, the figure sitting in a chair and the range of household objects that make up this odd ‘domestic’ environment–are completely covered in images shot from the TV. The effect is to suggest that we are formed–in every way–by the omnipresent medium.

Also included in Cherry and Martin’s exhibition will be a number of Heinecken’s videograms. To make these concrete photographic works, Heinecken held unexposed photo paper up to the television set, turning it on and off to expose the image.

Martha Otero Gallery presents “Charge,” an exhibition by Tim Biskup featuring a new body of work.

Sat 9.28 MarthaOtero TimeBiskupSee image: A Subtle Advertisement For Mind-Numbing Pain, 2013, Cel-vinyl acrylic on canvas, 144 x 96 in

The title, Charge, holds complex personal references for Biskup.
For Biskup, a ‘charge’ can be harbored by things constantly rejected as too abstract, too small or too anomalous. Biskup acts as a physical receptor to these alternative cultures, by producing works that channel musicality and vibrancy into a stream of progressive Modernism.

Sat 9.28 1301PE BlakeRayne1301PE celebrates the first solo exhibition of New York-based artist Blake Rayne.

Blake Rayne’s work has been pivotal in the resurgence of conceptual painting over the last twenty years.

Rayne has used compositional systems as an organizing principle along with an inherent semantic play to create paintings. Employing diverse techniques, Rayne weaves personal, art historical, and formal narratives to explore the many contexts in which painting can be seen and understood. The goal is to simultaneously establish a pictorial order and to destroy it.
