Three Coconuts Synopsis

Three Coconuts

While Chicago is the backdrop, the play takes place in 1968 during the Democratic National Convention. Downtown, police clash with protesters across tense city streets. Meanwhile, Ida Blumenthal prepares Sabbath dinner in Albany Park. Her husband abandoned Ida and her young son years earlier, but she has still not lost hope of finding a new husband. She invites three suitors that came to her through an ad in a Jewish newspaper for a Shabbat meal. When the men arrive, her brother Irving nicknames them the Three Coconuts. Moreover, upstairs neighbor Maury secretly runs a brothel from his apartment. Soon, vice officers investigate the building and threaten everyone with arrest. Consequently, a quiet Shabbat dinner spirals into escalating chaos and danger. Nothing unfolds as planned during that fateful evening.
