The Broad Stage debuts REVEAL, a new series of digital artist residencies. Enjoy a go behind-the-scenes airing free episodes on June 14, 15, and 21, 2021.
Take a deep dive into the creative process with The Broad Stage’s new slate of artistic collaborators! In this unique series of digital residencies, REVEAL takes art lovers behind the curtain and into the hearts of groundbreaking art makers from around the world, whose original works we’ve commissioned and will present their World, California and Los Angeles Premieres over the next two seasons. The commissions, many of which center on BIPOC voices and directly address systemic issues of inequality and injustice, are designed to invite artists, their work and their practice to take root on and beyond the stage. Through exclusive footage, demonstrations, discussions, performances and more, you’ll gain insights into the artists’ ideas and transformational practices, and learn how their work evolves from an idea to fully-staged work.
Two of the most visionary and daring musical voices of our time, Wayne Shorter, “generally acknowledged to be jazz’s greatest living composer” (The New York Times), and Esperanza Spalding, “well over a decade into one of the most fruitful and strikingly original careers” (Rolling Stone), have collaborated to bring a modern operatic re-imagining of Iphigenia to the stage. A must for all fans of opera, classical and jazz!
Before the Los Angeles Premiere next year, REVEAL: Iphigenia presents WS, a longer super nova, a short film directed by Arthur Jafa delving into the genius mind of Wayne Shorter being his inimitable stream of conscious self, along with a new, live concert from Esperanza Spalding, powerhouse drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and multifaceted pianist Leo Genovese.
