L.A. Zine Fest takes place today. Organized by a collective of zine-enthusiasts, the festival will be held in the parking lot of the Helms Bakery this year.
In case you don’t know what a zine is…it is very much like a journal…NOT A BLOG…it became very popular in the 1990’s as it was celebrated in Zine Fests…like this one. A Zine is a tangible property…..a homemade jounal or book.
The Zine Fest has been featuring zine panels and workshops in many venues all leading up to today’s eent. It’s an opportunity for zinesters local and far-flung to meet and exchange ideas with each other and with all of Los Angeles!
Be sure to check the website for a list of workshops, panels, and readings taking place throughout the day.

In conjunction with the Zine Fest, Arcana Books hosts a special two-day exhibition which began yesterday, Saturday, February 15 and continues today. Arcana: Books on the Arts will feature the work of reclusive outsider artist and folk engineer, eb.
Oft-viewed as a crank by the academic establishment, this special presentation will take a closer look at eb’s controversial-yet-plausible theory that for decades Egyptologists have been incorrectly attributing symbols depicted in the hieroglyphic language as religious icons, when according to eb, they are simply artistic renditions of the actual tools used to build the pyramids.
The exhibit will include reconstructed contemporary working versions of these tools as well as present a fully operating ramp model that demonstrates exactly how all of the oddly shaped “function specific” tools depicted on the hieroglyphs worked together to form a larger assembly line system that enabled the Egyptians to easily roll the massive stones up the ramps.
