In 2009, seeking a fuel efficient alternative in the gridlocked streets of LA, Schreck discovered a thriving community of moped aficionados.

In Culver City…

Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects is pleased to announce the gallery’s fourth solo exhibition with conceptual artist Charles Gaines. The exhibition will present a group of large-scale works, collectively titled Numbers and Trees: Central Park Series II, as well as a new, related series of ink on paper drawings.

Sat-Oct29-2016-SusanneVielmetter-CharlesGainesOver the last four decades Charles Gaines has employed system-based methodologies to critique the notion of artistic impulse in the creation process. After encountering Tantric Buddhist diagrams in the late 1960s, Gaines recognized how a system can generate an image and an image generate its system. Beginning with such early works as Walnut Tree Orchard (1975), he started creating and implementing his own logical systems. In that early sequence as in the ongoing Numbers and Trees series, the tree-object is collapsed within a gridded numerical order to introduce implicit paradoxes in perception as a way of criticizing the idea of the empirical object. The resulting work creates a tension between the organic outline of the trees and the numeric logic that manifests their image, where object and implementation are locked into an arbitrary relationship, each determining the other.

In Boyle Heights…

Nicodim Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by German artist Philipp Kremer (b. 1981). The exhibition will be on view from October 29 through December 3, 2016.

Seemingly effortless but complex, eccentric but liberating, obscene but amicable, Kremer’s paintings of people engaging in orgies and lovemaking in his “Gatherings” series and crying faces in his “Pause” series not only strike the viewer with an “in your face” effect, but also emanate nuanced sensitivity toward humanity at the same time.

SSat-Oct29-2016-Nicodemee image: by Philipp Kremer

The erected dicks, the anguished faces, and the interlocked bodies in his monochromatic “Gatherings” are depicted with large, swift, yet precise brushstrokes of unmixed, bright, and transparent oil paint. The artist also intentionally leaves ostensible voids on the canvas to reinforce the aesthetic expression of the negative space, which allows for a more objective reading of his provocative portraiture other than mere eroticism.

SOct6-HuZGalleries-Ransom AnotherLongDay edited-1ee image: John Ransom What Chills Us is Not the Hunter, But The Night 2012,40” x 30” Acrylic on Illustration Board, Oil Varnish

“The inspiration for the “Ravens” series was my observation of Ravens & Crows in their day-to-day life. These majestic birds exhibit certain behavioral traits that I most admire in humans. They are independent, yet communal. Intelligent animals, they train their young and maintain expectations of fellow members of their flock. Their generally business-like demeanor does not seem to prevent them from experiencing the exhilarating aspects of our planet. I paint these sophisticated creatures in a dark light, accentuating their aggressive nature. The juxtaposition of realistic characters showcased against abstract backdrops creates a surrealistic union. Beauty in duality.” – John Ransom. To find out more about John Ransom, visit http://johnransomla.com/

Another artist Eva Montealegre feature one of her works in the exhibition. Montealegre has creates her art out of her Topanga studio which oversees a wild life conservancy, providing her with a view of the Santa Monica mountains and the Pacific ocean.
