Sat-Nov7-WilliiamPope-SusannVielmetter
The silent parade is a soundscaped walk that links the local to global through an embodied experience of the near and far: from Los Angeles’ sites of civil unrest, riots and protest to US military interventions in different parts of the world, from the forest to the desert in fifty years of warfare and occupation. The unified, simultaneous listening experience isolated by each participant’s headphones mimics the individual driving experience in and of Los Angeles, creating an audio-visual collage of movement, sound and image as the walkers traverse the city in a silent parade.

Jimena Sarno has composed the silent parade in collaboration with: Deena Al-Adeeb, F Douglas Brown, Arshia Haq, Eunsong Kim, Gelare Khoshgozaran, Raquel Gutierrez, Jen Hofer, MPA, Tameka Norris, Yann Novak, and Suné Woods.

Jimena Sarno is a multidisciplinary artist and organizer. She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina and currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

In Laguna Beach…

Lu Martin Galleries holds a reception for a solo exhibition titled “Into The City” featuring the cityscapes of Brooke Harker.

BrookeHarker1See image: Brooke Harker, “Corner of Pearl” medium: ink, oil &acrylic on canvas, dimensions: 90″ x 60″ x 3.75″

Harker will be doing some live painting at the Saturday event from 2:00pm to 6:00pm. Jennifer Verge’s art will also be on view. Brooke Harker is a contemporary American artist based in Los Angeles, California.

“Into The City” is the culmination of her artistic endeavor to express on canvas the big city environment, the amplitude of its energies, and the curious activities of its inhabitants bustling underneath a canopy of concrete. As an artist sketching and photographing in cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Tokyo, or Hong Kong, Brooke first allows her senses to simply observe and absorb. Among the visual cacophony she eventually finds herself attracted to specific details, accentuating those with her brush, while quieting others: streetlights, signs, colorful backpacks or purses, interesting passersby. Brooke never knows what will catch her eye, although she is predictably excited when cyclists, umbrellas or taxis pass through her compositions, for they especially stoke her imagination. Behind each detail, Brooke imagines a personal story and wonders about the lives associated with them. Sometimes she doesn’t need to imagine, as random people often approach her and volunteer their personal stories, which she loves!

JLuMartinGalleries-JenniferVerge-2014-In-theMomentennifer Verge will be showing five works at Lu Martin Galleries. She said she is excited to show her work and will be in attendance at both the Thursday and Saturday event.

“This painting was inspired by a conversation with a friend. Sometimes everything you want is on the other side of what you are afraid of, we confuse fear with exhilaration. Take the leap…live in the moment and enjoy every second!!!”

In his first exhibition at the gallery, Better Living Through Design, San Francisco based artist Brett Reichman constructs images where the rules of domestic life are flipped: for instance a figure is posed on top of the dining table and the dinnerware is arranged on the floor.

Continuing and developing an idea she began for her 2014 New York show, Enter, Butterly builds on the concept of color heeding its visual, physical, and psychological weight. Paying attention to how color works in each piece, Butterly thinks of herself as a “collector of color” and explores how each hue relates to the other, the tensions that are created between colors and the ways in which they become equal.

bG Gallery hold a closing reception for “Gay Summer Rick: City and Sea.” Gay Summer Rick’s new series of work takes the viewer “from Broadway to Speedway” (Downtown Los Angeles to Venice Beach) along freeways, side streets, and out to the sand.

SeeSat-Oct17-Gay-Summer-Rick AfterTheGoldenBull 48x60in LR image: “After the Golden Bull”, Oil on Canvas, 48 x 60 Inches

Rick’s paintings depict urban habitats vibrating alongside Southern California’s ephemeral coastline. Rick intended to focus on the journey rather than the destination with this body of work. Views from the roadways and walkways traveling from downtown Los Angeles to the beaches of Venice or Malibu take us on an adventure where we are able to enjoy unanticipated perspectives along the way. We can observe and relish intimate moments; stopping to enjoy the lights on Broadway in a moment without traffic, or by walking up 6th Street toward the Bridge without the sight or sound of cars.

The dynamic relationship between the two environments of urban habitats and the coastline is heightened by the artist’s choice of using a palette knife instead of a brush. Her distinctive painting style creates an arresting color field in which the city’s sharp edges dissolve into the impressionistic embrace of sand, sea and sky.

Honor Fraser Gallery presents Madame Psychosis Holds a Séance, Rosson Crow’s third exhibition with the gallery.

Sat-Nov7-HonorFraserSee image: Madame Psychosis Holds a Séance, 2015, Film still

Rosson Crow’s new work explores the fictional world of Madame Psychosis, an aging showgirl obsessed with the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Crow’s striking and mysterious protagonist—whose name is derived from David Foster Wallace’s novel Infinite Jest and is a play on the term “metempsychosis”, also known as reincarnation—is a character whose sense of herself is inextricably bound up with the events and conspiracy theories surrounding Kennedy’s death. Comprising a short film and a series of paintings, Crow’s new project explores individual psychology and the ways in which national identity is shaped around moments of historical significance. Giving rise to countless alternative accounts and conspiracy theories, the events of November 22, 1963 are etched into the American cultural consciousness and are still enmeshed in a web of confusion and contradiction more than fifty years later. In this exhibition, Crow employs this charged event as a narrative device to engage questions of individual identity, the power of emotion to confuse our sense of reality, and the human desire to connect to shared pasts while establishing relevance in the present.

HSat-Nov6-PaulLoya-CherylLouiseHumphreysumphreys is an emerging American contemporary artist whose education and career as a designer have played an integral role in her ability to communicate through the medium of paper. The artist’s blind embossings eschew the trappings of traditional printed work, leaving only shape and shadow visible in an effort to draw the viewer closer and create a quiet and intimate conversation.

n this exhibition, the artist explores the visual dialogue of communication in a digital age, questioning our current paradigms through matters of love, memory and an acute curiosity of the ever-evolving definition of connection.

Expanding upon the iconographic lexicon that characterizes her work, the artist now introduces color, optimism, and love in this collection in an honest and thoughtful attempt to re-sensitize and reconnect to the tangible.
