From the time of antiquity, humans have wondered about the mysteries of the world around them. When reason and science cannot provide a satisfying answer, imagination steps in and mythology takes root.

Artists nurture the narrative of a myth, giving it life through storytelling, song, dance and visual art. The resulting works offer insight into a culture’s ever fluctuating perspective on existence.

Neo Mythology gathers artworks that bring myth to life in a contemporary context.

See image: Jennifer wolf, Untitled, 2015, natural dye extract, mineral pigment, acrylic, on canvas over panel, 48″ x 72″

Seeking to evolve the way in which she collaborates with nature, Jennifer Wolf’s most recent series of works combine her signature flow process with innovative new layers of painterly construction. Prismatic forms dance under translucent layers of crimson, scarlet, fuchsia, violet, indigo blue and orange in a ballet of color and texture that envelops the viewer. Wolf’s fluid abstractions make manifest the space where the artist’s intuitive gestures merge with the organic essence of the natural world.

See image: Julian Rogers  Nightlife, 2015, oil on canvas, 36 x 36 inches

“NIghtlife” is a solo exhibition of new paintings by Los Angeles based artist Julian Rogers. The show features 3 bodies of work all addressing different types of still life: from arrangements of various fruits on mountain tops, to table top arrangements of various dishware and silverware with scraps of wood, to arrangements of strewn clothes, spray paint and blue tape.

All of Rogers’ chosen subject matter is depicted life-size and rendered with precise detail in darkened, monochromatic fields of color. The realism of the scene that the artist constructs becomes diffused and mysterious in the dim lighting, and slows down the recognition of the objects. Rogers draws on the long history of still life painting and through his darkened lens challenges the viewer to take another look.

Sat-21Nov2015-RoyalProjects-LAPhillip K Smith III will debut a new sculptural series he calls “Light + Shadow Works” at the freshly opened downtown L.A. Royale Projects Contemporary Art space. The free, public Opening Reception for Phillip K Smith III: Light + Shadow Works will take place on Saturday, November 21 from 4:00-8:00 pm at 432 S. Alameda Street, Los Angeles, CA 90013 *(enter on Seaton between 4th and 5th). This exhibition marks Phillip K Smith III’s first solo show in Los Angeles.

Smith III’s Light + Shadow Works are a culmination of his artistic focus over the last several years. Unlike some of his earlier hallmark techniques that employed technology and LED colored light, this series is marked by a distinct absence of those ingredients. Their pure white forms rely unabashedly upon the minimalist interplay of ambient light and shadow to create their visual impact. Smith III explains, “These works are about the subtlety of light across a surface…about tracing the shift, the step, the gradient of light that is contained and revealed within these forms. They are about presenting light in its most reduced state.”
