DanSat-June11-2016-DanielRolnikiel Rolnik Gallery presents Keith Dugas’ (aka KROSSD) new show, “KROSSD KOVERS” with a non traditional opening reception. Why? Because, Keith started record club, a monthly gathering at the gallery where music lovers gather to  listen to vinyl records and hang out.

In addition to the new art show by Keith Dugas inside the gallery, there will also be over 30 artists as vendors outside the gallery, in the courtyard, selling their goods. This is very close to Keith’s heart, since he has been writing essay’s about his favorite artists for over 10 years and was especially stoked to hear that The Little Friends of Printmaking, Tuesday Bassen, and Flower Pepper Gallery are taking place in what is being dubbed the Epic Carnival.

The event runs from 12:30pm – 9:30pm, featuring 10 bands and 10 comedians performing outside in the gallery’s courtyard. Musical acts include Victoria, Kalisher, Brissey, Celebrity Crush, hit me, Harold, Hollow Ran, and more with comedians Kyle Dodson, Ryan Budds, Gabby Lamb, Bryan Rainstein, etc., interspersed between the bands.

Happening just down the block on La Cienega Blvd., later at 6pm…

Sat-June11-EdwardCella-RichardPrinceEdward Cella Art & Architecture is pleased to present a rare collection of artworks, ephemera, and personal correspondence by artist Richard Prince. This private collection was assembled by New York writer and producer Douglas Blair Turnbaugh.

The archive dates to the artist’s earliest and most formative years (1977-1988) and offers an intimate glimpse into the unique relationship and confidential rapport shared by this influential artist and his devoted early patron. In Turnbaugh’s own words: “Some of the pieces in this collection may at first glance be seen merely as common objects.  But Richard is a master prankster, provocateur, poet, alchemist, prestidigitator – he can transform a material object, without altering its physicality, into an idea, into art, into an icon.” Richard Prince: The Douglas Blair Turnbaugh Collection (1977-1988) features notable highlights from the collection, offering visitors a museum-like experience.

Also opening tonight is “Beefcake,” a series of photographs by Michael Gregg Michaud. A genre as old as the camera, beefcake photography celebrates and eroticizes the male form.

Throughout the years beefcake has informed fashion photography, advertising, and promoted celebrity stardom. But what was once provocative and shocking is now commonplace. To titillate, the boundaries have constantly been pushed to the limit to accommodate changing times. Pornographic films have graduated from grainy black and white 8mm silent short films to big budget movies with estimable production values.

Another one at Bergamot….

Ruth Bachofner Gallery presents “Show Title,” an exhibition of new work by Ruth Trotter.

In her first exhibition at the gallery, Ruth Trotter brings together a series of paintings Sat-June11-RuthBachofner-left-Seiko Tachibana-right-Ruth Trotterthat embody a narrative between material and inner spaces that the artist explores through abstraction. The physical progression of her paintings and the psychological spaces she accesses through her process generate a series of intimately scaled paintings, dense with opposing forces and harmonies. Each of her paintings, which initially come off as flights of painterly fancy, are studies on the focus of intention.

The work by Seiko Tachibana will also be celebrated tonight. Recognized as one of the Bay Area’s premier printmakers, Seiko Tachibana’s work is built around concept of connectivity and creating unified wholes from smaller pieces. This has been a central theme throughout her career, and continues as she moves from printmaking to working more with ink and acrylic.

Here is an early one in the Adams district…

Enjoy a free art and interior design talk at Modern Resale.

Traditionlly, it hSat-June11-ModernResaleas been considered anything from a faux pas to all-out blasphemy to select art based on furniture and decor. Given the increased awareness of important authored pieces of design from the past, and the rise of design superstars such as Philippe Starck and Patricia Urquiola, the relationship between fine art and furniture and design is shifting. In Modern Resale’s first salon series, we’ll explore what role the interior designer and/or consumer plays in the balance; how interior designers add another level of authorship; and how we navigate and stratify these vibrant cultural expressions.

The conversation will be moderated by Abigail Stone, Los Angeles Editor at Large for California Home + Design and will include Delta Wright of Delta Wright Interior Design and curator Maryna Hrushetska, among others.

This event co-hosted by D2 Art and is part of the Los Angeles Design Festival.

LAST Projects is pleased to present “This Will Hurt Me More Than You,” curated by Ilona Berger & Andrew Wingler.

ISat-June11-LastProjects-Ciriza-Untitled-2016mage: Ciriza, Untitled, 2016

The exhibition features works by Ciriza, Michael Dee, and Cynthia Herrera that implements visceral healing strategies for disembodiement through the slippery concepts of the pharmakon and the pharmakos. Both pharmakon and pharmakos contain seemingly paradoxical dualities, the former referring to remedy/poison/ spell and the latter to a scapegoat/ human sacrifice/ outsider/magician/ healer/. The pharmakos in ancient Greece took on collective sins or trauma and purified the community through death or ostracization. This ambiguous position is elucidated by Derrida in his deconstruction of Plato’s Phaedrus and by Kristeva in her discussion of Oedipus as pharmakos king in The Powers of Horror. It is in this multiplicity of meaning between that we approach the interventions of “This Will Hurt me More Than You.”
