In Culver City…

Sat-April-1-PaulLoya-PEREGRINES- NOLAN HALLPaul Loya Gallery presents PEREGRINES by photographer Nolan Hall.

Casual is what comes to mind when describing Nolan Hall’s photographic style, transporting the viewer to these small intimate moments with his subject. His subjects having very public lives as professional athletes and  images of them are usually prearranged by their sponsors for marketing purposes.

Nolan gives us that “fly on the wall” experience as one of their peers, he has captured these candid moments where the silence seems to settle in. Peregrine not only applies to Nolan’s lifestyle but also describes the viewer, as he takes the  them into that quiet place.

Cherry and Martin is proud to present Nathan Mabry’s fifth solo exhibition at the gallery. The exhibition will include new drawings and two new bodies of sculptural work: Late One Night and Low Hanging Fruit.

See image: Nathan Mabry, gripgrabstacksqueezeSat-April2-CherryandMartin-NathanMabry-gripgrabstacksqueeze

For over a decade, Nathan Mabry has explored the power of transformation. His sculptures and drawings are sites for energetic formal and intellectual reinvention.

Mabry writes, “I’ve always been fascinated by the power of the object, and how it relates to personal and collective experiences.” In Mabry’s work, objects—be they art historical or pop cultural—are transformed. In playing with the look and feel of these objects, how we relate to them and how they relate to each other, Mabry reinvents their meaning—and thus their power.

Head to Washington…

Sat-April2-Thinkspace-AmySolThinkspace is pleased to present Garden Gamine, featuring new works by Amy Sol. Born in Korea, where she spent much of her childhood.

Sol now lives and works in Las Vegas, NV. A self-taught artist, she has developed and refined an intuitive technique over many years, mixing her own unique pigments and mediums to create signature palettes, and working primarily in thinly layered acrylic on wood panel. Her illustrative paintings and works on paper are dreamy and beautifully stylized.

An artist who embraces the Golden Age of illustration’s simple expression of narrative, Sol’s concise work perfects visual storytelling with fantastic imagery.

Kayne Griffin Corcoran is pleased to present “The Ocular Bowl,” featuring works by Alex Olson, Agnes Pelton, and Linda Stark.

SeSat-April2-KayneGriffinCorcoran-AgnesPelton-StarGazere image: Agnes Pelton, Star Gazer, 1929, Oil on canvas, 39 x 25 inches

The show brings together work by three cross-generational artists concentrating on ideas of vision and how it occurs beyond the eyes alone. Each artist brings a specific perspective to ideas of sight, from the physical act of seeing to inward and metaphysical explorations of mind and memory. The exhibition begins with historical works from the 1920s by painter Agnes Pelton and traverses through contemporary works by Alex Olson and Linda Stark. This will be the first time each artist has exhibited with the gallery.

Also opening tonight…”The Diet,” Michael Bell-Smith’s first solo exhibition with the gallery and in Los Angeles. The Diet uses the ideals of strict, regimented eating habits as its catalyst. At its core, a diet is what one consumes to achieve a desired effect: input becoming output. It is often driven by trends and is constantly changing. Working across video, vinyl paintings and custom software, Bell-Smith has produced three different series under the umbrella of these intersecting ideas.

In Santa Monica…

DONI SILVER SIMONS and DONNA STERNBERG & DANCERS present 49 Days: Women Who Count at Arena 1 Gallery.

TSat-sun-April2-3-49DAYS-WOMENWHO-COUNThis work incorporates 42 female performers, a 49-channel soundscape, a visual installation documenting the creation of the work, and a post-performance discussion by the collaborators. The performance explores time, memory, and counting embodied within the roles of ritual and cultural identity. Counting is universal: being conscious of time and marking its passage is innate to mankind. We create calendars and mark off days; we leave our marks on the world and on each other.

In 49 Days: Women Who Count, women serve as the “keepers of time.” They are the ones who count. The performers, representing days, move simultaneously, overlapping one another as the performance progresses. Similarly, the sound builds, filling the space as voices and movement become both past and present. Rhythms begin to echo heartbeats creating a cacophony of sound. 49 Days: Women Who Count shows the evolution of ritualistically marking time.
