On November 15, 2018, NORCO College Art Gallery hosts an artist talk with the artists of “(im)material,” curated by Quinton Bemiller. The exhibition  features Fr.ederika Roeder, as well as Patricia Liveryman, Brenda Welsh and Jim Zver. The title of the show reflects its exploration of how formal elements of a painting take on meaning – both the material and techniques used to create it, and the “immaterial” thoughts and ideas that inspired it.

Three of Roeder’s paintings: Brooks Street (left side)

Roeder is exhibiting thirteen of her paintings in the group exhibition. She talks about her inspiration for the exhibition. “Much of my work the last few years focuses on a certain geographical area from South San Clement to North Newport Beach along PCH where I have spent much of my life. It evokes such a spirit of California Dreamin’…almost a romanticized version of the best of what Southern California is about. There is an underlying meaning or pleas to remind people of the beautiful resources or our state: its natural beauty.” Roeder went on to explain that Brooks Street is located just off PCH in Laguna and is well-known surf spot in addition to being a beautiful Laguna cove. “It is known to be extremely difficult as there are rocky points both to the South and North with a high and quick break that surfers love, continued, Broeder. “When not working I used to literally ‘cruise’ this area looking for surf with friends with our boards. I had a pale blue surfboard with red flames in the back. Everyone would stop at the end of Brooks Street to check out the waves. At high tide and high surf conditions you could literally paddle out nearly from the edge. Often, these Laguna vibes are a shimmering green different than the Pacific blue we k ow and love. Just standing at the edge of Brooks Street looking West to the Pacific is a beautiful experience.”
