LA Design Festival is back for its 9th edition. It will once again be held at the ROW DTLA. The LA Design Festival will be held June 20-23, 2019.
Created out of a desire to showcase up and coming talent, co-founder Haily Zaki explains how the festival began. “At the time, I was working with Dwell on Design. The General Manager of the show, Michael Sylvester, had the brilliant idea to start a festival to help kick-start the creation of a design ecosystem in LA. We co-founded the festival together in 2011. Truth be told, it was all kind of a social experiment at first.” I think we can all agree the experiment was a success.Zaki went on to talk about how she felt there was much more exciting design happening in LA that didn’t fit within a traditional trade show model, and she wanted to do something about it. “These younger, exciting designers and brands were perhaps finding it cost prohibitive and just not the right platform for their up and coming brands. And it seemed silly to me that LA didn’t have an official design festival, one that matched our city’s character and diversity — a moment on the calendar when we could all collectively celebrate.”
On Thursday, June 20, 2019 The LA Design Festival Awards Night and Fundraiser, the official opening takes place at the ACE Hotel in DTLA. Admission is $50 per person. Then sty to enjoy the After Party upstairs at the Ace Hotel. Admission is $20; See below to purchase tickets.
A second event for the public will take place in the streets of ROW DTLA. Design Block Party will feature music by dublab. Special exhibitions include: ON THE EDGE (a group show featuring work by the 2019 EDGE Award recipients), Epicene Gallery curated by Meyghan Hill and Uri Davillier, a pop-up bookstore by Archinect, a Color Experience by Dunn Edwards x Caroline Geys, and public design installations by Architecture Office, Dreamland Creative Projects, Ghatit Studio, Oasys, OWIU, MADWORKSHOP, and Some People. Outdoor summer lounges by Seedlip, Bend Goods, and Tidelli. See below to purchase tickets.

When asked how the event has evolved after all these years, Zaki added, “Over the last nine years, the festival has grown in recognition and community participation. From our partnership with the City of LA Department of Cultural Affairs, to last year’s keynote with our city’s newly appointed Chief Design Officer, Christopher Hawthorne, to epic exhibitions/tours/talks/parties and so much more, we are extremely grateful for the participation of the LA design community, our generous sponsors, and our amazing brain trust of designers and mentors to bring this event to life each year.
