In 2017 Clay visited Madrid for the first time. He spent days at the Prado, looking at the work of Velasquez, Goya, Bosh, El Greco, Rubens, and Titian. As a California painter who uses a bright palette, he was fascinated by the dramatically different way in which Baroque artists of the 17th century used color. As well, the cuisine of Spain intrigued him, especially the exotic varieties of cheese. When he returned from his trip he began this series of still lifes inspired both by the Prado and cheese which might have graced the table of a Zurbaran painting.
