September 26, 2019:
Head to Hauser Wirth…Charles Gaines, LA-based conceptual artist, faculty member at CalArts, and recipient of the 2019 Edward MacDowell Medal, will transform the Book & Printed Matter Lab at Hauser & Wirth Los Angeles into his classroom. On the occasion of ‘Charles Gaines. Palm Trees and Other Works,’ he will conduct a ten-part lecture series on the tenets of aesthetics and critical theory in art, bringing his mastery of the field into a public setting. At Bergamot Station…Peter Fetterman Gallery hosts three openings tonight… “New York, New York!” features the photography of William Klein, Berenice Abbott, Elliot Erwitt, Ted Croner, Norman Parkinson, Arthur Leipzig, Louis Stettner, Charles Harbutt, Walter Rosenblum, Bruce Davidson. In Chinatown…Eastern Projects Gallery hosts an opening for a two-day pop-up exhibition. “Abstractions” is the debut solo exhibition of painter Eric Sanders, featuring a bold body of abstract paintings that drawing upon a reservoir of untapped creativity that he built up over thirty years working solely in the business world. Now retired from entrepreneurship, Sanders has made a 180º turn to devote his entire life to the arts, his original passion. Abstractions will premiere 40 abstract works on canvas along 40 digital artworks, some incorporating mixed media, and all created in an aesthetic flow specifically for this show. Craft Contemporary celebrates three exhibitions. “RAW: Craft, Commodity, and Capitalism,” “Finding the Center: Works by Echiko Ohira,” and “Cynthia Minet: Jacked.” “RAW” features nine contemporary artists who work with commodities as their materials to construct works that reflect upon the history of colonialism, slavery, and globalization. Artists include: Charmaine Bee, Atul Bhalla, Sonya Clark, Raksha Parekh, Jovencio de la Paz, Ignacio Perez Meruane, Amor Muñoz, Juana Valdes, and Ken + Julia Yonetani.  “Finding the Center” examines Ohira,’s prolific artistic production over almost three decades, centered on the exploration of paper as a medium.
