Duncan Miller Gallery debuts Arnold Newman, a solo exhibition. The artist (1918–2006) was on the forefront of modern photographic portraiture. Over nearly seven decades, Newman photographed influential figures who shaped art, music, literature, and twentieth-century culture.

However, Newman did more than document famous faces. He developed an approach known as environmental portraiture, connecting subjects with the places and objects that defined their lives. Consequently, his photographs reveal personality, creative vision, and individual character beyond physical appearance. His distinctive compositions helped establish portrait photography as an expressive art form.

This exhibition offers a fascinating glimpse into Newman’s working process. The photographs come from the complete planning archive for Five Decades, his major retrospective. The exhibition toured internationally between 1986 and 1993, introducing audiences worldwide to his remarkable career.

Meanwhile, the retrospective’s final international presentation brought Newman’s work to Japan. Pacific Press Service (PPS), a Tokyo-based agency, organized the Japanese exhibition and helped introduce leading Western photographers to Japanese audiences. The photographs appeared at Tokyo’s Odakyu Museum in 1992, followed by Osaka’s Keihan Gallery in 1993.
