“Coming Out Kinky” …now running at Promenade Playhouse!

Now that the title of this show has grabbed your attention, it should be explained that “Coming Out Kinky” is the sexualMay3-JeanFranzblau memoir of writer-performer Jean Franzblau. She had the first inkling that her emerging sexuality was out of the mainstream when still at the playground stage while she was growing up. Her older sister, who had a frank sexuality of her own, caused Jean at first to retreat from her sexual awareness. When Jean finds her sibling’s erotic literature, Jean begins to have other ideas.

Jean comes of age and has multiple romances. Young and attractive, one might think her path to love and lust might be a smooth one. Not quite so. She has an emotional neediness that gets in her way. One evening, a new friend takes her to a private club where she is formally introduced to BDSM (bondage/domination/sadism/masochism). Role-playing there is as important as any physical act, and she finds emotional, physical and political satisfaction that she has not yet achieved elsewhere. She still has a way to go until her journey to become a completely actualized, sexually fulfilled woman is complete. But what will she tell her mother?

Written, performed and produced by Jean Franzblau, “Coming Out Kinky: A Grown-Up Story” is developed and directed by Karen Aschenbach.

Writer-performer Jean Franzblau graduated cum laude from UCLA and trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. She has appeared on television (“Her Last Chance”) and on film (“Falling. In Love,” “Lisa and Lauren,” “Internet Dating,” also writing and producing the latter two).

Director and developer Karen Aschenbach’s stage credits include the recent hit “Ripe” (starring comedian Wendy Hammers) and “Mrs. Cage” (an L.A. Times Critic’s Choice). She has also directed independent feature films. Jean Franzblau portrays some 20 characters in this adventure story for curious and open-minded adults to enjoy.
