In Santa Monica…Bergamot Station hosts several art events….This is where our Pick of the Week happens… Skidmore Contemporary Art!

Lora Schlesinger Gallery is delighted to present Lawrence Gipe’s eighth solo exhibition with the gallery, “Where We Were, and How We Got There.”

SSat-July18-LoraSchlesingeree image: Lawrence Gipe, Where We Were, and How We Got There, 2015, graphite on Arches, 42 x 118″

Gipe’s modular mural drawing, currently 60’ long and is composed of a series of 10’ triptychs composed of images culled from the artist’s vast archive of clippings documenting modern technology, propaganda, and epic industrial landscapes. In the work, Gipe creates a panoramic vista of undulating scenes that engages the visual rhetoric of capitalism and nostalgia, addressing their intertwined relationship in visual culture. The drawing is based on the length and proportions of the Apocalypse Tapestry in Angers, France, an artwork that has always impressed Gipe with its scope, deep symbolism and tragic power.

Also opening tonight is Robin Cole Smith’s exhibition “Afterglow.” This will be the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery. Inspired by the natural world, Smith creates hyper-realistic drawings and paintings of landscapes and natural wonders.

Sat-July18-LoisLambert-Rigoberto-MenaLois Lambert Gallery presents Rigoberto Mena’s collection, “Bamboo Garden.” As one of Cuba’s most acclaimed artistic visionaries, Mena explores space and depth through the lens of architectural structure and abstract expressionism. In this series, Mena integrates handmade paper from around the world, providing another dimension to his canvases.

Through its ability to translate defined urban landscapes into a fluid visual language, “Bamboo Garden” functions as a reconstruction of familiar spaces, sensations, and memories. Pulling his inspiration from within, Mena describes the painting process as a deep, intimate, and honest conversation with himself and, subsequently, the viewer.

Head to Washington Blvd…

Thinkspace presents two exhibitions… “Along Infinite River,” featuring new works by Philadelphia based artist Yis Goodwin.

See image: Nosego, Along Infinite RiverSat-July18-Thinkspace-Nosego-Along-Infinite-River

An imaginative painter, illustrator and urban muralist known for his work’s unrestrained creativity, Goodwin, or “Nosego,” brings detailed totemic pieces to life. His work is inspired by his childhood memory of recombining elements from the characters in his toy box, Nosego creates new forms from borrowed individual parts.

In the project room, new works by North Carolina based artist Brian Mashburn will be on view. His beautifully detailed oil paintings are gothic in sensibility, but timely in their social and political preoccupations. Though dark and ruminating with romantic disillusionment, the works, nonetheless, suggest the possibility of redemption in a world largely burdened by its own self- inflicted ruins.

Then head North on La Brea….

Sat-July17-KayneGriffin-CocoranKayne Griffin Corcoran debuts an new exhibition titled “About Face.” The group show is curated by Kristina Kite and Sarah Lehrer-Graiwer and features the art of Joan Brown, Brian Calvin, Maria Lassnig, Dianna Molzan, Christina Ramberg, and Diane Simpson.

The artists and works in About Face employ ideas of scale, zoom, and cropping to complicate figuration and portraiture in relation to abstraction. Emphasizing images of proximity and visual intimacy or immersion, the female form, visage, and trappings loom large. About Face presents an approach to figuration perceived through the self’s inherent abstractness and an attention to abstraction that assumes as much. Ideas of defiance, insistence, and repetition are significant in the works and attitudes of the artists presented. Each, in their own way, tracks degrees of approach, withdrawal, or turning inward and considers how aesthetics can picture that path. From self-portraits to formal geometries, a sustained commitment to one’s art as an intense pursuit both fanatically private and full of tremendous humanity is evident throughout this intergenerational group.

David Kordansky Gallery is very pleased to announce Smiley has no nose, an exhibition of new work by Tala Madani. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, and her first at the gallery.

See image: UnSat-July18-DavidKordansky-TalaMadani-Untitled-2015-oilonlinentitled, 2015, oil on linen, 80 x 98 1/4 inches (203.2 x 249.6 cm)

Tala Madani makes paintings and animated videos whose indelible images bring together wide-ranging modes of critique. She uses humor not only to upend social mores, but also to open up dialogue about cultural forms that too often remain in the background of collective awareness. In so doing, she also upsets formal and art historical conventions, openly embracing caricature, gags, and disarming simplicity as she develops and hones the conceptual underpinnings of each body of work.

Sat-July18-GoodLuck-Gallery FriederOr you can zip by Chinatown for some late night art parties…

The Good Luck Gallery hosts an opening reception to celebrate the art of Andrew Frieder.

In the work of Andrew Frieder (1959-2014), figures struggle with each other and themselves: A dead-eyed nun prepares to kill a snake with a rock, a demon restrains the strings of an archer’s bow, a naked man communes with a skull. These depictions of serpents, phantoms, sexual grotesques and hybrid beasts – often drawn from classical mythology and the Old Testament scriptures that Frieder was so conversant with – are playful but menacing and carry a highly-charged psychological weight. A gentle and subtle coloration of soft pastel and muted earth tones distinguishes the work, which is sometimes scrawled upon with text, and frequently pierced, perforated, sewn, glued and otherwise driven into aesthetic submission, resulting in a strangely harmonious combination of the visceral and the meticulous.
