On Saturday, October 30, 2021, join SPARC for its 19th annual Día de los Muertos celebration and ritual at 5pm PST. SPARC Board Member and UCLA Professor Martha Ramirez-Oropeza will lead a traditional Calling of the Spirits ritual in Nahuatl and Spanish, inviting the spirits to join the celebration. The public is invited to contribute to a community altar by bringing copies of photographs of loved ones that hold meaning for them. The community altar will be installed outside the front entrance of SPARC ready for additional photographs to be added during the event.

Support local vendors and stay warm the entire night with tamales, hot chocolate and Oaxacan treats outside in SPARC’s garden. After the ritual SPARC will be open late for a timed-entry talk with Martha Ramirez-Oropeza on the significance of the Dia de los Muertos ritual. The Durón Gallery will also be available for visitation, featuring artworks by artist and SPARC co-founder Judith F. Baca. Upon arrival, visit our check-in table to receive your color-coded wristband and entry time. Make sure to pick up your contributions to the community altar promptly at 7:00 pm if you would like them returned.

All COVID policies will be in place. All guests must wear masks and show proof of vaccination to enter the building.
