“Looking at Cathy Lightfoot’s optical paintings often require bridging the gap between what you see and what you cannot perceive. While your eyes are fixed upon abstract dot patterns your mind must contend with the unknown and search for a foothold from which to grasp their meaning. To unravel these conundrums, it is necessary to fill in the blanks, just as halftones allow us to see gradations where there are none. What soon comes into focus is neither a familiar image or puzzle, but a luminous interactive experience. Despite the stark precision of her paintings, the mystery of what these images represent is never resolved; at best they are suggestive. But maybe we are asking the wrong questions. It isn’t a matter of what they are as much as it is about our perceptions. What concerns Lightfoot is the act of seeing, itself.” – Lorraine Heitzman

“The birch slice paintings are reminiscent of the souvenirs travelers once purchased as mementos of their road trips.  These “souvenir” portraits document local life in rural California. The narrative that runs through them is the story of my new home, the small town of Ojai, California. The birch slices depict both the rural and industrial landscape, as well as the resident wildlife whose habitats shrink as the landscape inevitably changes. My concern is that the landscape is leaving us, and we are running the risk of losing our humanity in the process. If we retain our appreciation of our place in the natural world, the efforts to preserve our history enhances our lives.” – Hilary Baker
