ICA LA

Barbara T. Smith

ICA LA presents a comprehensive museum survey of Los Angeles artist Barbara T. Smith (b. 1931, Pasadena, US). A pioneer of the performance art movement of the late 1960s, Smith has long produced work that explores the self, sexuality, gender roles, physical as well as spiritual sustenance, love, life, and death. Assembling an expansive range of artwork and performance-related ephemera, the exhibition will also survey Smith’s bold experimentation. While her groundbreaking performances have received critical attention, the objects Smith has made over nearly sixty years—many for, or as a result of, performances—are less known. This includes the artist’s radical Xerox works, mixed media assemblages, sculptures, artist’s books, drawings, paintings, photographs, and videos. Organized by ICA LA guest curator Jenelle Porter, this survey will celebrate Smith’s incomparable contributions to contemporary art, feminism, performance, and technology.

Don’t miss the above survey in addition to Infinite Rehearsal in the Project Room, and 2023 Agency of Assets fellows in the Annex.

Infinite Rehearsal

Art House will receive an invitation to create, inspire, teach, and play without the burden of expecting an end result. ICA LA Project Room will be transformed into a space of continuous rehearsal. Conceived together with Los Angeles-based artist and choreographer Chris Emile, Infinite Rehearsal reimagines the gallery as a studio. Here, Emile and frequent collaborators from his movement-based collective No)one.

Featured artists include Chris Emile, Shauna Davis, Marcella Lewis, Jobel Medina, Cody Perkins, Jordan Slaffey, and Qwenga. Rehearsals will take place daily at ICA LA, Wednesday through Sunday.
