On Saturday, December 16, 2023, Luis De Jesus Los Angeles host two art talks (at different times) which take place in conjunction with two of its current solo exhibitions – SHERIN GUIRGUIS: A’aru // Field of Reeds, as well as LIA HALLORAN: Warped Side. Be aware there are two times – 11:00am – Sherin Guirguis and Kris Kuramitsu; 2:00pm – Lia Halloran and Jesse Damiani. See below for additional info about the art talk, plus while you are there, be sure to stop in to see Cosmologies by Liz Collins. The exhibitions will remain on view from November 4, 2023 – December 22, 2023.

Art Talk Sherin Guirguis, Lia Halloran

Join Sherin Guirguis and Kris Kuramitsu, Senior Curator at Large at The Mistake Room in Los Angeles, for an in-depth exploration of Sherin’s practice and her current solo exhibition.

In addition to the art talk, the gallery hosts a book signing as well. Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist Kip Thorne will join curator and writer Jesse Damiani to discuss their 13-year collaborative odyssey which resulted in The Warped Side of Our Universe — An Odyssey Through Black Holes, Wormholes, Time Travel, and Gravitational Waves. The book, published by Norton/Liveright and released this past October, features Thorne’s poetry and Halloran’s original art to create a new type of book that is a “shape-shifting pageant of art, science, and poetry” and doubles as a vehicle for communicating major scientific breakthroughs of our time.

SHERIN GUIRGUIS

SHERIN GUIRGUIS: A’aru, Field of Reeds Gathering is an exhibition of carved paper, mixed-media paintings. These new works are an expansion of A’aru: Field of Reeds, exhibited during her 2023 residency at Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art, Culture & Design. The artist continues her dialogue with contemporary and historical antecedents. Thus Guirguis posits cultural identity and intersectional feminisms through an integration of oral histories. In addition abstracted motifs as well as a consideration of minimalism and ornamentation in non-Western aesthetics are also included.

LIA HALLORAN

LIA HALLORAN: Warped Side is a new series of paintings exploring the curiosities of warped space-time. The artist created over 500 paintings during a 13-year period while making the book The Warped Side of Our Universe: An Odyssey through Black Holes, Wormholes, Time Travel and Gravitational Waves. It  is co-authored by Halloran and Nobel Prize-winning astrophysicist Kip Thorne. These new paintings are a cumulation of their friendship and collaboration to mobilize science, art, and poetry to explore aspects of the universe that many are curious about.

LIZ COLLINS

The artist has long challenged the boundaries of art, fashion, and design. She has had a decades long commitment to experimenting, innovating, and deconstructing the shape-shifting potentials of textiles. In Cosmologies, Collins materializes her ruminations on origin stories of the universe, mythologies of ethereal forces.

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles

The gallery focuses on representing emerging and mid-career artists. These artists actively engage in regional and global art discourse, with a particular emphasis on intersectional diversity. These artists use conceptual and formal strategies as a critical lens to address a myriad of concerns. These include the social constructs of gender, racial, as well as subjective identity. Also other areas include: the power of aesthetic frameworks to shape political and economic reality, and the historical role of the artist within society.

Luis De Jesus Los Angeles opened in Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station in 2010 and relocated to the Culver City Arts District in 2011 where the gallery operated for ten years.  In 2021, the gallery opened an expansive space in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District.  Prior to moving to Los Angeles, owners Luis De Jesus and Jay Wingate opened their first gallery in San Diego in 2007 known as Seminal Projects.
