September 2023 Hauser Wirth

Stefan Brüggemann: White Noise, a group show titled  Nonmemory, and American artist and filmmaker Harmony Korine’s AGGRESSIVE DR1FTER.

Hauser Wirth

White Noise, Stefan Brüggemann

Titled White Noise, Mexican-German artist Stefan Brüggemann’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles features work created over the past two years. Paintings, installation as well as neon works will address the ways in which information and misinformation affect us. It not only saturates our consciousness, it shapes our understanding of and approach to the world now. Additionally, Brüggemann’s art layers texts in a distinctive type of controlled chaos, opening a space between legibility and abstraction that yields a sense of doubt and questioning in the process of parsing truth.

Nonmemory, Group Exhibition

Curated by Jay Ezra Nayssan, Nonmemory brings together seminal works by Mike Kelley and a group of seven contemporary artists. Artists include: Kelly Akashi, Meriem Bennani, Beatriz Cortez, Raúl de Nieves, Olivia Erlanger, Lauren Halsey, and Max Hooper Schneider. These artworks all play with the role of memory as it posits our perceptions of space and place. A variety of media and material is utilized by the artists in this exhibition. The use space as the repository for dreams, fantasies, traumas, and anxieties offers opportunities to re-imagine as well as recreate reality. The title of the exhibition ‘Non-memory,’ takes direct inspiration from Kelley’s use of the term, a way of treating, reordering, and also representing the complex and unstable relationship between memory, space, and identity.

AGGRESSIVE DR1FTER, Harmony Korine

This is American artist and filmmaker Harmony Korine’s debut solo exhibition with Hauser & Wirth. AGGRESSIVE DR1FTER features a new series of acid-hued paintings drawn from his new film Aggro Dr1ft. This unprecedented fusion of Korine’s painting and filmic practices expands the irreverent polymath’s exploration of the aesthetics of gaming and their seepage into the wider culture. This exhibition also marks Korine’s first presentation in Los Angeles in over eight years. It will remain on view through January 14, 2024 in the complex’s South Gallery.

Finally, an additional art talk takes place in conjunction with this exhibition on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 1:00pm. Enjoy a conversation between artist and filmmaker Harmony Korine and LAXART Deputy Director and Curator, Catherine Taft. CLICK HERE to RSVP.
