In Venice…Beyond Baroque hosts the 9th Annual Fine Arts Film Festival (FAFF). The annual event presents 101 films from 32 countries. The films will be shown for in person audiences June 10 – 11, and online from June 10 – 19.
Moreover, the festival is dedicated to showing selected films about art, photography, collectors and artists of all mediums in and out of their studios, galleries, museums, public art, and alternative art spaces – many premiering for the first time anywhere. Sow & Tailor debuts The Longest Cornrow, a live performance by Los Angeles based artist Devin Troy Strother. The performances take place June 6 – June 9, however, the artist reception is today – 12:00pm to 6:00pm. The Longest Cornrow delves deeply into themes intrinsic to Devin Troy Strother’s practice, encompassing identity, heritage, aesthetics, and personal maintenance. This work scrutinizes traditional practices related to beauty, presentation, and also cultural stereotypes. Early in Boyle Heights
The Boyle Heights Youth Festival returns with a free in-person event. It was established to address the rising violence impacting local families and youth during summer breaks. Over time, it has evolved into a source of positivity and creativity for the community. Moreover, the festival is led by individuals aged 13-24, and it’s a testament to the power of young voices. Weekly meetings since February have led to the formation of entertainment, logistics, marketing, and volunteer committees, shaping every aspect of the festival. Hauser & Wirth DTLA hosts a performance and art talk with Jeremy Toussaint-Baptiste in conjunction with its current exhibition Jason Rhoades: DRIVE. This exhibition features cars as readymade works of art. Toussaint-Baptiste’s mobile sculpture is a decommissioned Ford Crown Victoria—with tinted windows and a carceral security barrier—that has been transformed from an object of surveillance and violence into a low-frequency musical instrument and amplifier of Black cultural practice.
