Rooted in Africa

The collaboration with Willy Karekezi and Liz Gorden (owner of the Loft at Liz’s) came about through photographer, Alberto Mesirca. He was based in Rwanda during his wife’s tenure at the Belgian Consulate after having had a 4 year tenure in Los Angeles. Willy was coming to Los Angeles with an armful of rolled up canvases of artists works from Indiba Arts, the Artist Collective that he established.

Within minutes of the two collaborator’s first meeting it was agreed that they would co-curate Rooted in Africa. Willy would bring artists from his collective and Liz would choose LA based artists whose roots are from the African continent. However, there is one exception, one of the artists is American born who has recently traveled to Kenya.

The works offers a glimpse into various African cultures. It also represents how two people diversely different from one another can come together as Co-Curators.
