Kim Garcia

The exhibition a trace is not a map to you explores family history through sculpture. Garcia reconstructs stories, objects, and archives, inviting visitors to encounter the past. Small pieces contrast with monumental forms, creating dreamlike spaces that question the American dream. Garcia draws on traditional friezes and mythic storytelling. Meanwhile, she links family legends with geopolitical histories through resin panels, ornaments, and sculptures.

The project began while Garcia cared for her father, whose dementia intensified his longing for the Philippines. Although he had lived in San Diego for forty years, he still called the Philippines home. Therefore, Garcia explored her ancestry to reconnect with him. Her research uncovered her great-great-grandfather’s role during the Spanish-American War. This discovery connected family history with colonialism and diaspora. Later, Garcia made her first adult trip to the Philippines. There, familiarity deepened her sense of belonging. These experiences shape her exploration of memory, identity, and home.

Danica Phelps: Reach

In this exhibition Phelps examines financial exchanges, debt, mortgages, and the struggle for economic security. Through drawings, the artist explores these challenges as a working artist and mother. Since 1995, Phelps has documented the financial relationships between art, everyday life, and money. Moreover, her work exposes transactions that society often hides or avoids discussing. Drawing from personal experiences, Reach encourages conversations about artists’ financial realities.

The exhibition also questions the American Dream through artistic work and single motherhood. For Phelps, supporting herself and her son requires constant financial effort. However, earning income often competes with the time and energy she needs for creativity. Through her drawings, she examines ownership, security, and independence. Ultimately, her work reveals the hidden labor and financial pressures behind economic stability.
